I got a present of a neck buff from a couple of Boardies a few years ago and it's a brilliant bit of kit for the colder days.
I was up over the gap last weekend and it kept my face and ears toasty warm while worn like a face mask.
    Buff.

    +1 on the buff.

Not cycling in the buff, let's be clear.

A 'Ninjaclava' FTW - just make sure to take it off before going into the shop/cafe for your mid-ride break in case they think they're being raided...

Tk maxx have the Oxford brand of "buffs".

3 for €10. They are excellent value. One on yer head pirate style and one around your neck you will be sorted.

    Buff.

How do you achieve that then with a neck buff?
Can't see how it could cover your face - without blocking your vision.

Presumably you pull it up til it covers the end of your nose at the front and hook it over your ears at the back. Should still be able to see.

I can get mine up over my nose and right up the back of my head. I don't need a hat when I have it on it's soooo long! I love it. I had it out this morning for it's 2012 winter debut while running.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,277 ✭✭✭MB Lacey

Agreed on the buff, and if I were you I'd make sure you get one by Buff rather than a cheaper one.
I have 3 of the polarbuffs (by buff) and one pretend buff I bought cos it was cheaper.
I find that the cheaper one doesn't absorb the sweat at all, so you end up with cold wetness around your face (not nice), the Buffs on the other hand seem to soak up the moisture (not completely, but 99% better in comparison).
    That's just my 2c.

I'm pretty sure they are not recommended for running, the risk of tripping up on the hem of the burka is high.

The Buff website shows many different ways of wearing it. Probably the best way is as a mask or balaclava to protect the face.

Also, its the only product website I've seen that gives 'Eire' as a location option.

Free delivery to Ireland with this crowd. I'm sure you'll all be rushing to buy the tri colour one (middle of page 2).
I love that it's the only one with a review! 5 stars at that.
Actually, just noticed the union jack one got a review as well.

I would not even bother with a buff. I just wrap a scarf around my neck when it gets very cold. In this weather though its too warm for one

Most important question I guess is what is the correct way to wear shades with that? Inside or outside?!

While there's no way the ninjaclava is Euro compliant, I figure it's probably best to stick with OREC Rule 12 on this one - 'Glasses are to be worn over helmet straps at all times.' - so outside :D

A scarf has the potential to unwind and get caught in spokes. It's not as easy to take on and off while on the move.

Be sure to order the polar buff, the regular one is more suited to spring/autumn. I wear my spiderman one all the time. When I see a crime in progress, well...I've said too much.

Doesn't work, beard just collects the moisture from your breath and your face is all wet when you get off.

I bought a Buff and it still tends to keep some moisture, but if you're wearing it as a scarf it can just be twisted around to a dry part. Also make sure you pull it down if you like to shoot snot rockets, they build up quite quickly in there.

I have two buffs, both made by Buff, a synthetic one and a merino one. The synthetic one I've tended to use under my helmet, the merino one is longer and I've tended to use that around my neck. My winter cycling jacket has a high-ish collar though so I tend not to need one around my neck when out for a spin usually, I mainly wear it just with commuting kit. I've found both buffs good but the added bulk (length) of the merino one can be inconvenient at times.

I also have this merino beanie and it is excellent. It is thin so wearing it under a helmet has never been a problem but it is also very comfortable and very warm. It also looks normal when worn off the bike, whereas my buff makes me look like an escapee from a childrens' panto when I I wear it as a hat.

My wife swears by this merino neck buff, which can also be worn up over your head. It's a thicker/heavier merino than the beanie above but still fine enough that it's not very bulky.

In fact, I'd recommend the merino base layers from the ChocolateFish range too. I've found the performance and quality to be consistently excellent. For example, I use this zip neck top for my commute, and I can wear just that single top layer in temperatures down to 5C, and probably lower, (with the beanie above under my helmet) without feeling cold. I suspect I'd find it too warm as a base layer for long spins (I've not tried) though it regulates heat well and it is still quite comfortable for me up to 12C or so so it might be fine. For someone that particularly feels the cold it might be ideal though, and the high collar means that it can take the place of a neck scarf/buff/whatever too.

Depending on the glasses you may have difficulty with that, no sticky-outy ears to hang them on.

That's actually true - hadn't thought of that at all!! it hasn't been a problem so far though but now I have to figure out what magic has been keeping my glasses in place while wearing mine!

As people love fancy-schmanzy Rapha stuff on here why not try their "winter collar"

I got one a couple of years ago and must say I love it, even if I don't like Rapha (long story).

    http://www.rapha.cc/deep-winter-collar

Out of stock right now and a ridiculous price, but it's super thin and warm, easy to stow, fits under tight tops etc.

I'm doing something very different, I just put a decent layer of Vaseline on my face. Sound a bit odd, but it works as well when you go skiing.

Can't use scarves or neckos, within a minute my glasses are steamed up :(
