    Hi all,

I will be having an appraisal in December and I'm wondering how do I go about bringing up/discussing wage increases. I will be working with the company 2.5 years in an I.T support role and I would say a lot of time has been invested in getting me up to speed and i would be considered a valuable member of the team. From what I have seen from other support jobs; my wage is lower in comparison and generally other jobs look for less experience and offer more money. Should I be making more than 20k when I have 2.5 years experience and would be seen as a valuable member of the company?

You earn less than 20k per year with 2.5 years experience. Then I say you could bring it up, but tactfully. Depending on how they see you at your appraisal, you could put forward a proposal for a wage increase. But do so, in a way that allows for some give and take, so an increase isn't a one way street.

I have a performance appraisal coming up in Decemember also and I'm with the company less than 6 months. An increase for me is based on performence though.

It will actually be my 1.5 year appraisal as I did not have one last year since I was only there just under 6 months. In that time my workload and responsibility has doubled. From what I have seen from other support jobs and jobs similar to mine on sites such as jobs.ie the average wage is between 22 to 25k. I don't see any reason why I shouldn't be looking for close to 25k.

You won't get a 25% wage increase unless you move jobs.

The trick to getting a wage increase is very simple. Say you want a wage increase on Monday. Don't wait for your appraisal, ask now. I now do this in every job after a year. I state that I am the best worker and deserve a pay rise. I fight my case every year, I get the best marks on performance reviews, push the boundaries on whats expected of me and I get yearly boosts to my income of 4-7%.

If you don't do this, it will be pushed off to next year assuming you do well. Don't let that happen.
