Work Experience for TY.

    Hi,

Does any one know of any airline or airport that offers work experience for students in TY.

I know it is impossible nowadays to get actual experience in the air, but does anyone know if any ground experience is available, baggage handling, cleaning aircraft for turn around etc.

I contacted Aer Lingus and they said they can't at the moment but will keep me in mind, and I emailed Cork Airport and they said I can, only if I have a relative working there.

    Thanks

You could've got it in Baldonnel if you had tried earlier or know someone there.
You woudn't be working there though, more like a 1 week tour of everything from their fleet to ATC and Aviation Fire engines

What about trying the flight schools? You might spend a lot of time behind the desk in ops, but when I was training any of the lads doing work experience that came in all got plenty of flying time in the back seat.

Or try the ground handling agents in Dublin or Cork, the DAA website should give you contacts details for them

If you live near Dublin, you could try Simtech as they take in one student per week for work experience. Did mine there in February, it was a great experience.
Simtech is a flight simulator facility where they train pilots for different airlines.

They wouldn't be insured for that. Sure mine didn't even cover construction sites above 20m :p

Most ground handling agencies wont touch work experience in the last few years because the schools work experience insurance doesnt cover working round aircraft and airports,

also they dont cover working around boats and ports.

So read your insurance form if it covers airports, ports and working above the height of 3m.

Then when applying for the work exp i would give them copies of these forms to read.

Hey man, I'm doing work experience here next month, I'm so excited because I've always wanted to be a pilot, what did they have you doing there?

I was mostly shadowing an engineer who was in charge of maintenance on the simulators. Some days, it was slow so I was given some data entry work and was given a few hours to fly around on the dual jet (similar cockpit of a B737 but missing a few features) and the Avro RJ sims. When I was there 4/5 years ago, Simtech was running three simulators and Aer Lingus was running their A320 sim. Simtech played no part in maintenance/operation/training of the A320. I was there for 5 days and honestly, I had an absolutely amazing time and would definitely go back.

Any more questions, feel free to pop me an message.

    Hope you enjoy the experience!

I was lucky enough to do my TY work experience on the ramp in Dublin. Best two weeks work I've ever had. They even let me marshal an A330 on stand and drive a push back tug (no aircraft attached of course). Pre 9/11, Simpler times.

I did work experience in Shannon a while back, great experience.

Is it not very late to be looking now? I recall that I did mine sometime before Christmas!

Unfortunately I'd say your wasting you time asking as the OP hasn't been active on "boards" in almost 18 months.
