if a cyclist was stupid and dishonest enough to inject EPO into themselves today, would they be more likely to be caught than they would have been a few years ago ?

    Have the tests improved ?
Clearly the epo tests a few years ago were not catching many people......and as one of the US postal team said, if you injected before you went to bed, it couldnt show up in a test the next day.......have the tests improved since then ?

Injecting EPO is a bit old-school. I'm sure things have moved on.

Step 1. Buy altitude tent/holidays to Tenerife.
    Step 2. ...
    Step 3: Profit!

There are apparently various factors involved in the production of EPO which can be manipulated with drugs.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypoxia-inducible_factors

    Or Google "hypoxia-inducible gene manipulation".

Assuming there are drugs for which there are no effective tests, using hypoxia as a training tool gives you an excellent excuse when WADA come knocking with your anomalous biopassport results.

I really shouldn't have to say this given the number of warnings given in numerous threads, but as I've had to delete one post already:

Doping speculation is not permitted (be it named individuals or teams)

    Thanks

I have it on good authority that all the testers have the week off, so you should be fine injecting today. let us know how you get on.

I think what hasn't been clarified here, is that yes EPO use is still of use to someone, but the ability to dope to the levels of 50% is gone. It's not just that the tests have improved, your blood profile should follow a certain pattern, i.e. over a three week tour your red count should drop, with the passport, if they can't actually detect a substance they can detect your profile being abnormal. This is why you find some people altitude training (there is debate about it's efficacy) as when you return from this it can be used as a 'masking agent' or excuse for blood manipulation (either epo or transfusions). Well maybe not excuse, but it can be used to explain a variation in your blood profile.

However, if you aren't in the blood passport system and you are careful then yes you can/could still dope with EPO and not be detected, but you'd have to be micro dosing more than mainlining huge amounts of it.
