I thought this came out a few months ago. Not exactly surprising really.

I suspect they will both be pinged, especially with the current 'doping' overhang in the sport - UCI will want to be seen to be active, surely?. There is clearly email evidence that a deal was done - I guess Vino will attempt to 'explain' it, but I think Gilbert will suddenly have won LBL before he knew he did (2011).

Sorry for being green behind the ears and all...just recently got into cycling...But i thought that deals being made were common places?

Like Kimmage says it was commonplace in Rough Ride, also vaguely remember LeMond mentioning it in Slaying the Badger...

'Arranging' results is commonplace in the post-Tour criterium circuit - it is seen as accepted. Arranging a result for a major race such as a Momument, is another matter - though I think in the era of Merckx et al, it was occasionally done. I think money changed hands for assistance in races - though it was probably not so much a case of directly buying off a competitor to ensure the result, as in this situation, more a case of favours gained for favours later to be returned. Kelly is mentioned as being shrewd operator of this 'Karma Bank' in many major races.

The fact is that UCI regulation 1.2.081 exists to outlaw the practice of 'selling' results and Vino is likely to go down in flames on this one, I suspect. It's not as if its a surprise to hear of him up to this - "Once a tosser, always a tosser" I'd suggest. Kolobnev's acquiescence is just as - if not more - objectionable.

They would be aware of the regulations and know well enough not to do it. I dont know when the regulation was introduced, though  perhaps its always been there.

My memory of LBL 2010 is a bit hazy but I think that Vino and Kolobnev went off in a late break. Are they saying that this was arranged on route before the final hill or pre arranged before the race ?
