Leatherman from Santa

Mrs Orion has agreed to get me a new toy ... a Leatherman ... for Christmas. But I get to pick which one. I'm tossing up between the Surge and the Wave. The Surge is nice but the extra weight puts me off - 50% heavier than the Wave - although the price is similar depending on where you look.

I'll be using it camping and hiking as well as a edc tool.

Any other recommendations and sites/b&m stores to buy from?

I have the surge, its on my belt when ever im out hunting, hiking or messin about and i love it. The weight is never an issue, i wouldnt notice it on my belt

Thanks. Just saw the Blast too - which doesn't have a serrated knife or diamond file but I wouldn't miss them tbh. It doesn't have a Blade Exchanger either - but I'm not sure what that even is so I won't miss that either :D

I have a Wave and a Supertool 200. Can't fault either of them. I got the Supertool as a Christmas present 12 years ago and bought the Wave as a present to myself 8 years ago. The Supertool is in my BOB and the Wave is where it has been since the day I bought it, on my hip.
Don't be so quick to write off the diamond file, I use mine to take rust off and sharpen fish hooks and my other knifes. If needed it can put a very fine edge on or take out nicks from a blade. Very handy in the field.

I have a Wave, nice piece of kit and if it is good enough for Survivorman Les Stroud on his shows who can complain. I suppose it depends what you plan on using it for at the end of the day.

This would be the one I'd be asking for.

I have the Charge TTI, wear it everyday in work on my belt, and never notice the weight of it. Has gotten me out of a lot of situations, and has every tool imaginable on it. Great piece of kit, bit expensive though.

I carry the SuperTool and have to say, never had a problem with it. It's marginly smaller then a stanley knife and I dont notice the weight of it in my pocket but as an EDC, it's used nearly every day. Nothing fancy, no bells and whistles, just good, reliable, strong locking tools.
Got two cheaper ones for our BOBs. Ones a stanley and the other from lidl. Their not bad multi-tools but the Leatherman is just too good to be sitting in a bag!

i have a mut and am very fond of it i always have it on me and most the time
i have a second(and some times a third :o edc) and while it is heavy in the hand i dont feel it when its clipped to my pocket

i am always useing the saftey cutters on it and it has a nice sized blade for most other tasks i have used every tool on it even if its not for what they were intended :p

Thanks for the replies folks. I'm leaning towards the Wave. Where's the best place to buy? Prices very considerably. Jackson-sports do it in a gift box with a handwarmer for 125. americanexports do it with a maglite, beltclip and lanyard ring for 105 but 15 shipping on top. 53degreesnorth have it for 105 by itself. Anywhere else competitive pricewise? Basecamp, the scout shop, peterson's and great outdoors are stupid money for them.

I have a sidekick and use it in similar roles to those you describe. I've found the build quality just as good as the more expensive models.

The saw and knife blade are both locking and very useable.

Might save Mrs. Orion a few pound and gain you a few brownie points ;)

Thanks. Kind of settled on the Wave now anyway. Jacksons do it with a maglite for £99 (€115) which is the same price that site does it by itself.

The Wave is ordered for me. Don't buy that from the scout shop. Most expensive of any shop. The only thing I buy there is my uniform and only then cos they're the only place that sell it.

Hmm well I havnt bought anything in there since my cubs days of mid 90s:pac:
    they have it for €49.
Its gonna be my 1st Leatherman & she has a budget of €50ish..
I dont really want her to spend anymore tbh..

I dont think she is online savvy & the other dub city shop I could find were capel camping & k2 @ €55.. same price as flashlights.ie.

its a shame ebay & donedeal adverts have their stupid no knive/blade rules..
Once we are all over 18 & not criminals then I dont see a problem..

Sorry going off on a tangent there..Im still cant wait for xmas:D & Your a lucky man getting the wave!

    Bought one from here
    http://flashpointsystems.ie/Leatherman.html

comes with a great little LED (1 AA) torch that I now carry all the time at work. Very powerful for it's size. Tool comes with a pouch and I had a small knife pouch that the torch fits in.

I have the wave for 2 years now. I like it a lot but do have a few comments: it has recently rusted and seized - but thankfully for the guarantee they will refurbish it in sallynoggin. the small bit driver on it also snapped :-( Also I find the design of the handles quite hard on your hands when doing heavy work with the pliers. The handles are not ergonomically designed like other tools.
I've just bought a Gerber multitool. Havent received it yet but reviews around the place are favourable. Also, the pliers on many of them are spring loaded and the handles a better shape imo. Also a nice bit cheaper on the price!

If it rusted its down to you, not the tool...

Have the Leatherman Squirt P4 on my keychain at all times; handy to have, and best of all; it doesn't look like a knife, and it's primary function is a pliers, so if asked about it by security (at gigs, etc), show them the pliers, and it doesn't get taken off me.

If anyone wants to look at them in a B&M shop, Army Bargains off Capel Street has a couple of them for show in a glass case.

i never posted what santa got me
it was nothing from my wishlist as wifey said "im not getting you another god dam knife" even though it was a torch i wanted (guess who didnt get my hints) any who under the tree christmass morning was a stack tool chest on casters pretty stonking bit of kit :D

Charge TTi all the way for me.

Leatherman knives are ludicrous prices here. I've seen the charge for less then 100USD, when you'd pay over 100 euro here.

Any leatherman dealer should be able to get it sorted. Remember someone on here got theirs sorted in Petersons opposite Trinity collage.

Does anyone know if you can buy leatherman knife blades ? Ive the leatherman Skeletool but im not a lover of the half and half blade (should have got the Skeletool cx:rolleyes:)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,226 ✭✭✭gerrowadat

Petersons do full parts and warranty repair. I had the nose of the pliers snap on my TTi (dropped a jeep on it), replaced no questions asked.

Didn't drop it directly - Was adjusting the valve on a bottle jack and it caught the tool between the valve and the jack body. Weight of the jeep coming down on the valve snapped the nose of the pliers in two. Was told it was the only pliers break they'd ever seen :-)

Just got the skeletool and style cs in a nice metal box from petersons. €47!!! Sweet deal. They have 20% off all non tabacco products. Also got a tin of Christmas pipe tabacco cause it's nice. Bit pricey but a lovely smoke.

I went in to Peterson's in town once to get them to repair a Leatherman, an old model, that had two screwdriver blades broken. The lady behind the counter took one look and threw it in a box and handed me a replacement without saying a word. When I asked for a replacement leather pouch, she said "No" and gave me the fabric pouch, which is useless. I had to buy the leather pouch, which was Eu 16 at the time. This eventually wore through in service. I went to Protac in the Curragh camp and bought a slightly large leather pouch for Eu 3, which is perfect.
the lady in the Peterson's shop was clearly not a paragon of customer service as she literally uttered one word "no!" and one number, "16", when asked for the price of the pouch.By contrast, Mr Protac was very helpful and very chatty.

    regards
    Stovepipe

By the sound of that your gettin through boots! Highly recomend a pair of meindl army pro, most expensive boot there but they will last you years no matter what you throw at them. I took the plunge about 6 months ago, €230 very well spent

Nah, I had 2 pairs of magnum spider elites (tan and black) a few years ago, they've done me since then. Don't do enough serious hikes to justify meindls just yet :-)

Was in petersons today in town and they are still having a 20% sale on everything bar tobaco. Great deals to be had on leatherman, victorinox and LED LENSER. Picked myself up a new EDC victorinox that is not too big to live in my pocket

Even with 20% off they'd be very expensive - that's based on prices when I was looking around. Got my Wave from americanexports for 110 including the leather pouch, lanyard clip, belt clip and maglite solitaire. Only places I found more expensive than Peterson's were Bootcamp and the Scout Shop.

They're LED lenser and vixtorinox range seem to be on par with prices iv seen in hunting and fishing shops so 20% off them would be a great deal.
