    Hey Folks,

I'm starting a job a new job on Monday and will be driving a 40 mile round trip from home to work. I currently drive a 00 318i but need to change it as its giving a bit of trouble lately. So, basically would it be worth my while switch to diesel? I'm planning on spending no more than €5000....

    Cheers Bener.

5 days a week so 200 miles a week for work commuting yea?

That's only 10k per year, plus additional driving, it's a bit borderline for having a diesel?

Sorry ya it would be 5 days a week.

It's borderline take you a while to recoup the cost of a diesel.

Are you happy enough with your current car?

diesel, god no. i done twice your mileage, 400 miles in my petrol car last week, "only" cost €70 :)

No not happy with it tbh. It's starting to give me a bit of trouble lately and my mechanic thinks I should get rid of it as well.

Old 1.8tdci focus or 1.9tdi vw/skoda/seat should be okay for that mileage. But you will pay for one over the petrol equivalent. Do the sums and see if it works out in your favour.

Will it cost you €5000 to fix?

If it won't then you might be better off getting it up to scratch and keeping it?

If it's not in good nick and needs a lot of work you'll struggle to sell it, might have to send it to a scrapper?

I don't know how much it will cost to fix it up but I wouldn't be putting that sort money of into it. I've had a few things done to it recently such as replaced the cat and a sensor which cost few hundred.
I've the nct in the morning so I'll see how that goes first. It drives fairly well but its lacking a bit of power. I'd rather get rid of it and hopefully get something that won't give me much trouble. I'll have mechanic with when I'm going looking at another car too.
I've no problem sticking with petrol if there isn't much a saving on fuel costs...

I had a 96 316i for a few years... It was petrol.. Bought a 04 Santa fe a few months ago and it's diesel.. Doing about 500-600miles a week, delighted I moved to diesel...

Only!!!!!. I do the same 24km round trip 6 days a week and 80 quid lasts over 3 weeks allthough it depends on what you are driving!

Also take into account order times and what the dealer has to hand. Ended up with a diesel because it was what the dealer had to hand, and the money I saved by haggling more than swallowed the otherwise premium price for diesel.

That, and I like diesels for lazy hillclimbs, and a more graceful degradation than petrols.

SO your advice is, "look I have completely different circumstances to you OP and I went Diesel!"

Well lads thanks for all the replies, from what ye said it doesn't look like there would be much of saving changing to diesel so I'll probably stick with petrol. If that's the case I was thinking of maybe going for a 1.4 golf or an astra. Any suggestions on which would be more reliable or any other cars that would be decent value for around €5000.
