Hi all, looking for advice on petrol avenvis around 00 or 01, my da had one a few years ago as a taxi and with 180k miles all he had to replace was the radiator and i think it was fairly economical aswell

wouldn't get my hopes up on a petrol model being that economical.... but yeah, will likely be a trouble free car. but then im bias :pac:

Well when i say economical i hope it would be better than my old 1.8 mondeo

i have '98 avensis, 1.8 petrol, not that vvti , i have 7a-fe engine, lean burn.driving occasionally , for short distances, 1 to 3 miles. it gives me around 120 miles per 20 liters. .. it is 10 liters on 100 km, on constant cold driving, not bad tbh.

when i was driving fully loaded(5 people + luggage ) to donegal area ... 400 km, in average it took 6.5 liters, so not bad.

I heard, diesels are very good though.

It all depends on how you drive it. A mate is thinking of selling his 00 one and its minded like a baby.

Some older posts here say the gearboxes are a weak point, any truth in that or anything particular to look out for?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,356 ✭✭✭Mar4ix

steering racks and gearboxes are week point. bot once sorted, will go for years.
I know first few years they had an issue with gearboxes, i think till 2000, there was a recall or something. i know my car had warranty work in 2000 on gearbox.

unfortunately there is no proper forum for avensis owners, there is some in uk, but things are very slow there,, and not so many people there. i have some issues with central locking and native alarm system, even dont know who to ask to get sorted, .. but my car is 14 years old .... still goes, not sure how long ... :pac:

also they are eating oil, if not proper services done, oil leak thru stem seals or oil rings. if you do most of work yourself, not too expensive get sorted.

The facelifted models aren't especially reliable. Boxes are a weak point (then again boxes can give trouble in a lot of Toyotas), but the main problem with the models after the facelift is the potential for them to burn oil. Toyota fixed most of them, but you'd want to be careful, as there are still some oil burners around.

Is that the last model to the current? They chewed headlights originally too...... As for vvti, a mechanic used to give out about those engines citing them as "very very technical indwes" :pac:

That would be the facelift of the original model. Back in the day a d-4d model was a nippy yoke thatd spin its wheels in 2nd or 3rd coming out of a roundabout. The new model in 03 ruined all that.

I bought a 05 Avensis lately. Filled up the tank one day, 50 litres, 390 miles range the computer told me, I thought that quite poor. I usually put in 20 litres which get's me around 150 miles but I am again relying on the onboard computer which may not be accurate.

One gripe I have with it is the reverse lights, they're shockingly poor, pretty much non existent I would say.

You need to reset the trip computer. It calculates the range based on the average mpg.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,541 ✭✭✭Leonard Hofstadter

The trip computer in the Mk2 Avensis resets itself automatically (both average fuel and range) whenever it thinks you've topped it up with fuel. It's not possible to reset the average fuel consumption in one of those cars yourself! It generally tends to understate how many miles are left on a tank as well, plus it will tell you that you've no fuel left about 5 litres before it's out of fuel.

Pretty sure on the 05 you can manually reset it.

I'll have a look tomorrow and let ye know, got the manual in the glovebox if I get lost with all the buttons :D

Though, now that I think of it, it may well reset itself as the MPG starts out from 0mpg again after putting petrol in and usually around 150 miles added to the range when I put in 20 litres.

there seems to be 2 versions of the 1.6 in 101 and 110hp in the mk1, how can ya tell them apart or is there any difference with engine parts

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,528 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

110hp is the vvti model from mid 2000

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,528 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

The 1.8 had 112 bhp before it got VVTi, maybe that's where the reference to a '110 bhp' engine is coming from? Although, that engine is 7A-FE.

I have a '02 1.6 Avensis. I find it a cheap car to run. Getting around 750 - 800kms to a tank. I drive it easy, my journey is about 10km each way daily.
They can burn oil (VVti), but no big deal keeping it topped up.

The saloon models suffer from leaks in the boot. I've seen evidence in a lot of ones I looked at. Also the suspension top mounts are prone to failure. Easy enough to replace but about €75 per corner.
