I have been selling most of my lambs in the Mart for the past 2 years due to better prices especially for the demand for ewe lambs. Anyway dropped off 10 lambs to the factory this week and got on ok. Most of them graded r2 and r3 with 1 u3. What is the ideal grade for lambs. Do u get docked if they are 5 on the fat level etc any help explains it, many thanks

u or r 2 or 3 are probably ideal from a factory viewpoint. fat score 5 will lead to a deduction unless you are selling on a flat basis, depends on the factory. if you had really fat lambs the mart might be a better option. if you get used to handling your lambs over the loin and the tail head you will get a good idea of what fat score this translates into on the carcases. factory also very useful to get vets to check lungs and livers for pneumonia and fluke
