What lens do I need for safari? Some say 300mm has enough reach others reckon at least 400mm.

I have a canon 450d and was thinking of trying sigma 120-400mm os hsm but its quite heavy too

    p.s I'm on a tight budget €600 max, don't mind going for pre-owned

There are some nice lens that'll do the job, my preferred lens for a job like that is my 18-200mm. One lens for all. Great lens for walkabout but has an impressive range. Plus most have stabilisation so will be good handheld too.

And for the shameless plug I have one on adverts if you want to go search for it, there are others there too but all well within your budget.

Thanks Darragh, I'll take a look but I don't think that will give me enough reach. A friend is lending me a 300mm for a few days week so hopefully that will help me make a decision.
