Hi all. Out of interest how do other reserves get on when asking work for time off to do reserve duty?

I work weekends part time therefore the normal late or nights shifts as a reserve clash with my regular job. I normally have to go in after work around 11pm or get time off to do a shift. I normally work the night shifts every time they come up on the roster at the weekends.

A lot of GRs are in similar positions. However stations are often short during the week so if you discuss it with your unit sgt they may be able to roster you for weekday earlies/ lates (5-9 when there is no overlap) or nights. A friend who works shift work often does Tuesdays when his unit is in court as there might only be him and sgt for calls, and many areas be short weekdays/weeknights when members are on courses etc, particularly with the new roster as the units are smaller in the first place at these times.

I think though with jobs being scarce that your paying employer is number one. I wouldn't sacrifice your relationship with them for the sake of a few GR hours.

paid work is number one tyron!

if your afraid of losing out on hours, try work something out with a sgt so you can split shifts

also see if you can work across units

i wouldnt turn down paid work to go on duty - i dont think anyone would advocate doing that

Remember the EU working time directive recommends 11 hours rest from working before your next days work! So going on duty after work is not wise! Fatigued you could make silly mistakes.. need I say more!!!

I asked about this at my meeting in the station, you give in your work roster for the week and you'll be added into there roster based on that. +/- other commitments I would think.

    EG .

Monday you work 6am-12am. Then Tuesday 6am-12am. You could be rostered for four hours say 6pm-10pm. Defo no way you would want to be going straight into a Garda shift after stopping in your job at 12am, then starting at 2/3pm.

The other option is just work the reserve on your days off.
