I'd love to try a cyclocross race or two but I don't have a cross bike & don't really want to invest without trying it at least once! I do have a good road bike. Could I change the tyres on this & get away with it for a while?

yeah you could but you would probably need a new road bike after it.
Seriously you prob wouldnt be able fit the tyres onto your road you would need to stay upright on the first stretch of mud.
Then you have the issue of clearance at the brakes for mud build up.
    Then there is the gearing.

MTB s are allowed in the series running at the moment if that was an option for you

In the "B" races at the Fixx Supercross series MTB's are allowed (that said I didn't see any at the last one).

I'm with Bcmf on this as well, road bikes wouldn't take the tires needed and the brake clearance wouldn't be enough.

What gearing would you use while CX'ing it? I was thinking about giving it a go, it seems to be the rage around these parts. I would like to put together my own bike and was thinking a compact chainset on a 12-28 would be ok?

Thanks guys - that rules out the road bike then. Will look for alternatives...

Out of interest what sort of gear would you push in general in a CX race? My new fixed gear on-one bike can take CX tyres, but I'd need to know what gear to commit to so I can order a suitable freewheel...

I think the standard for cx is 32/42 at the front and whatever suits at the back though will be corrected on this.

Is it different rules depending on who is running the cyclocross event??

Pretty much. The default position is that MTB's are not allowed but the race organisers are permittted to make exceptions.
That said they do try to encoursge the use of cross bikes specifically.

There was 1 guy on a MTB in the B race at Tymon Park. Did a MTB rider not win the B race in St Anne's last year?

That's correct but St Anne's is unusual in that it's almost an MTB circuit and the guy who won the race is a very strong XC racer and his mountain bike had no suspension front or back!

And no front brake either! :D

St. Anne's could easily host an XC MTB race also...

Using a MTB would be a real pain for a CX race though, say your MTB weighs 27lbs, add on a few muddy laps and your pushing a 30lb bike around which would put you at a big disavantage...

A lot of the top guys have a single ring up front, not sure about running a fixie, reckon you'd need a few gears for the undulating terrain..though it would not be unusual to see a fixie in a CX race..

Now that it's been said no doubt someone will accept the challenge.

Would certainly make the dismounts/remounts more interesting when tiredness kicks in.

Think someone has fixie and singlespeed mixed up ;)
