It would appear that Tin Top racing may once again be within the reach of the man in the stand with the news that a series will be run for 1.25 Zetec Fiestas at Mondello Park in 2013. This series has run with success in Kirkistown and the regulations will be identical- allowing competitors to do a few rounds of each if they prefer as well as both series hopefully meeting up on occasion. This is more than likely the final nail in the coffin of the remaining Fiat classes, even though the Punto 1400s had argued themselves into oblivion, the Abarths had made a brave effort to keep together despite falling numbers.

It would also form an ultra cheap feeder class into the ITCC, perhaps even via their new 16v Stockhatch sub class. Either way, it fills the entry level tin top gap left by the Unos and Puntos perfectly.

Should the Fiesta series take off, and at an estimated GBP1500 build cost, there is no need to think otherwise, then expect donedeal to be wiped clean of any suitable cars on a weekly basis. There is also talk of a Celebrity car for the series, now that certainly does sound like a bit of fun. Forget Hector or Glenda, I want to see Aron Smith have a go. Now THAT would be worth watching!!

Right, I am off to donedeal!!

    Leo

Few of the lads here in UL are already looking into entering. All we do in college is go karting every fortnight or so, so this would be a nice step up for the UL Motorsport society anyway! Really would like to give this a go personally.

£1500 + car seems to be the price to get going, but we already have two Fiestas between us, engineering/manufacturing tools/materials and two sets of racewear! Should cost us next to nothing to get started (bar the MSI license, which none of us have! :pac: ).

What would entry fees, running costs be for a class like this? Once the car is kitted out , up and running how much would it cost to compete a full championship excluding unforeseen repairs.

That sounds brilliant and cheap enough for the average joe soap to get involved in. Second hand Fiestas are going too be like gold dust.

Well, you have five tyres for the season. :pac:

Entrance fee's are the only thing I can see that could be expensive and I'd say this will determine the success of this cup.

In that case 10 days racing plus 10 days testing plus accom and fuel @ 400 a round = 4000+1700+1800 = 7500 + 250 for the licence gives a total of €7750 without factoring in the initial car ,repairs, damage . Looks like the "man in the stand " would need 12k to consider entering the championship.

Not massive money at all when it comes to Motorsport but all the same for the vast majority of people 12k disposable incom is a lot.

Or else live at Mondello/Kirkistown and only enter a few races.

It won't be anywhere near that.

I'm entering production class in ITCC next year with a budget of €6000. that's allowing a lot of tyres and some other expenses on top of entry fees.

    Doesn't include car though

Shouldn't come to that at all. There's no rule saying that you have to test at every available opportunity. Obviously the more seat time the better but you have to be reasonable about it too, testing fees, extra fuel, extra tyre wear etc. Also, you can learn a lot in a half day's testing too. I did my first season racing this year with 4 test days for 12 races. I think I only skipped 3 test days.

Fuel for racing will be €30-€40 per race (incuding qualifying), transport costs to and from the track on top of that. It cost me around €100 in petrol for a 300 mile round trip to kirkistown with a hefty enough trailer behind the car.

The new regulations for the 2013 Mondello Fiesta Zetec Championship are now available. If you would like a copy, just send a mail to fiesta AT mondellopark.ie

Any word on the cost of entry fees and calendar for 2012, the email address for fiesta mondello above is not working.

Any chance of getting storage facilities in mondello for the cars ?

The lads are trying to get me to buy a Vee and do a full season, something I haven't done in a long time. You any use with a spanner? Cos I am useless :pac:

Wouldnt be good enough with a spanner to have any proper input! :D But in all seriousness, let me know what your plans are for the Vee even. Would love to have some form of "actual interest" from a team perspective, as oppose to as a spectator!
Is that a general offer?!?! :D

Depends on how good of a driver you are! ;)

Go On sure give the fiesta class a go yourself, antodeco

Nothing like sitting on the grid to clear out the heart valves and adrenalin glands

Remember the fella on his old age death bed only regrets are the things he DIDN'T do .

Give it a try and sure the prepped cars will be very saleable if you don't get hooked.

In these classes there's great Craic down the Back too if you think experience is lacking.

Go On, go on , go on , go on , go on , go on , GO ON

Numbers are now up to 22 registered compeditors , this looks like it is going to be a very good and affordable class.
I might renew my licence and try a race or two.

With Grid sizes of 22 cars this will be worth watching for sure

Do you have the ability to transport a car or would you be hiring one?
The brother just bought a fiesta so might use that for a race or hire one. Purchase and transport are not a problem but storage is.

There's plenty of newcomers to motorsport running a Fiesta this year, if you head over to backroads.ie there's plenty of info on the threads there.

Think a car can be built for well under 3k, entry fees are under €200 per weekend and threshold are fairly cheap too.

Cheaper than karting and probably cheaper than formula vee.

    Quick question.
If i buy a fiesta just for racing, and i get it up north, do i have to pay VRT on that car?. It won`t ever be taxed so i don`t see why i would have to.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 981 ✭✭✭se conman

Not sure of the answer to your question but you should drop an email off to MI and they will give you an answer, but talk to a few of the registered compeditors before you buy a car up north as there are a few people waiting on cars that there has been a bit of an issue with AFAIK.

The car won't need to be re registered so Vehicle Regristration tax can't be demanded, once the car isn't for public road use.

It's easier to get a 3 dr up north too. Watch out for rust rust rust , poke under Neath with a screw driver.

I agree, these races last Sunday definitely provided good entertainment.

Can anyone who raced post up what the entrance fee was to race in these races? Been thinking about getting in to some amateur racing on the cheap to keep me off the streets :D
