Having a little trouble applying password to my router

I have a sat BB package with onwave and while I don't think the problem is with them, I need a bit of help with this.

I have a ZyXel wireless router which I'm using for the wifi all over the house only I think that as there's no security applied to it I think the neighbours are latching on to it as there has been 2GB traffic on it in the last 3 days. There has been no video watching or downloading so I don't think that a laptop and 2 phones can amass this amount of usage in 3 days.

I've tried to apply a password to the network but my network connection cuts out whenever I do and when I try to select the network I get a message saying that the settings stored on the computer for this network are not the settings for the network. I've tried everything that I know of (which is admittedly VERY little as I'm a technological retard) to try and get around this but to no avail.

Can anybody help me out with this? Would be much obliged.

I'm running Windows Vista Home Basic

are you trying to set the wireless password while connecting through wireless?

imho, the best method is to connect to the router using a network cable and then change the wireless password through the web management gui thingy.

you may need to remove the entry for your wireless network from your laptop before reconnecting (if it is set to log in automatically it has remembered the credentials and will try with the old password next time its in range and tell you it cant connect).

then again, you are running vista home basic....I've had a run in with that before and nothing wireless is straightforward (or dependable that what works once will work agian) when it comes to vista.
