Dog wont' come back

My shooting buddy had fierce trouble with his young pointer(male) pup yesterday.
He is 17 months old, hunting and pointing very well but he will just not come back to him – no heed paid to whistle at all.
What are the suggestions, if any to sorting this?

Training. Put a longish rope 15 or 20 foot on his collar and when he calls him a good tug on the rope and keep pulling the until the dog comes in and give him lots of praise and a treat. Keep doing this until he comes without the tug on the rope. It's not too late to do this but I think it should have been done when he was much younger ad part of his basic training.

My Setter did the same when she was younger - While on a trip to the UK I picked up a lead which is 30 feet long - so basically clipped it onto her check chain nd let her off - called her just before she was reaching the end of the lead and when she didnt turn ran out of lead and got a bang from the check chain! A few goes with this and never had the problem again - always comes on my call now!!

Edit: As German Pointer said loads of praise when the dog is coming back!!!

2 words - E Collar!
His recall isn't done right obviously so if you want a dog this season get a collar.
If you want a dog next season use the rope!
17 month old dog needs birds now. A 29 month old in my opinion is too old so I know what I'd do!

I have used E-Collar in the past for this too - great results!!

My gwp bitch is just a year old and started to push out too far and self hunt. E COLLAR sorted that out straight away. I will always use it. Your dog must know the whistle though. Ive seen an e collar put on a setter who didnt have any time put into him and did not know the recall whistle command, nuff said.

Could not agree more this is the best way for any Dog that is in any way doing its own thing I got great advice on the E Coller here I used it twice and my Dog has just improved 100% it will work try it;)
