    As per this tweet: https://twitter.com/GardaTraffic/status/264328843555389440

Gardai giving hi vis items including LED bike lights for cyclists on Dame St 12.30pm to 1.30pm today. Bring your bike! Limited supply

I know there's a bit of a mixed opinion regarding high vis, but could be handy for a few people.

I'm raging I can't get some myself, but I have no way to make it in today :(

I've heard that the Guards might be doing it in a few locations in the next couple of days, and apparently one or two of the Dublin councils are considering a similar lights initiative in the coming weeks too, but I haven't heard any details yet.

They are down outside the castle, you get pair of leds, those little ones that elastic onto the bars, plus a bag & sam browne belt.
They're in good form - didn't bust us for riding up the pavement...

...nor the countless cyclists sailing through the ped crossing at the Gaiety. Good form indeed! ;)

Do they stay on when you press the button or do you need to hold the button down? :pac:

    I presume they're gone?

I purposefully avoided going through city centre today. Typical. Hopefully find them someplace else soon enough. Never say no to a spare hivis & lights.

Would it not be more effective to do it morning or evening to target commuters.

I'd say a large portion of those around the city at midday probably don't venture out much during rush hour or darkness.

They need to do this in the evening and on busy cycle areas. Give anyone without proper lights / high viz the pack.

I think that's the plan. This was more of a launch event, afaik, and the Guards themselves were saying the same thing.

Also, stopping someone on their bike in daylight and asking them if they have lights seemed to be eliciting a few quizzical looks from the cyclists. "B-b-but, it's not dark, Guard!"

    Had to laugh today.

Cycled by the guards and they asked if i wanted lights. It was a senior older guard who stopped me. Could have been the super or another high ranking officer. I said hell "yeah" and "whatever else you have". He told me to get off and come over and he gave me a vest and bag.

There was a junior guard probably no more than 20 years old on roadside pulling in the next rider. this was where i couldnt believe what i was seeing. It was a fella about 25 and he was as pale as a ghost and he was cycling uptowards christ church and must have been behind me. The young guard asked if he wanted lights and he didnt even answer he just kept looking at him as if the guard were speaking Spanish. It was truely amazing. He was the biggest junkie i have seen in donkeys (made adam and paul look like olympic sprinters) and when i took a look at the bike i knew immediately it was as hot as hell, a nice sparkling black giant mountain bike.

Anyhow he got off the bike and went over with the guard (all expecting to be thrown in a van and brought to the station no doubt). the guard then proceeded to put the lights on the bike and give him the hi-viz items before thanking him and telling him to go on his way.

It was the biggest act of buffoonery i have witnessed in my entire life. I would say the young guards colleagues were scratching their heads. The junkie had the worst body language and a long face all the way through the episode until the guard told thanks and with that the junkie kept looking over his shoulder probably expecting Jeremy Beadle to jump out of a tree.

Needless to say when he finally got his leg over the bike he went off with the biggest smile I have ever seen on one of those degenerates.
