    Hello
Anyone here with direct experience of the BMW 520d GT. Unexpectedly considering this after planing to get a 5 series touring.

Driven both, and a bit of diesel noise on tick-over, but the GT has more a "big car" feel and performance is adequate for the motorway 130kph/ city driving I do. It's close to 200kg heavier than the touring:eek:

This is NOT a query on the advantage of 3.0 diesel. I have that experience and appreciate the difference.

    Many thanks.

I read a review online of the 520d GT and, like all GT's, it is rated as inferior to the standard 5 series. But then again roadtests are often misleading. I'd imagine vgery few people would have direct experience of that particular model as it has just been launched.

It looks different, a little marmite in that it splits opinion, but I cant see it offering the practicality of the touring of that was the original intention of the touring purchase.

I assume you mean BM 'W'.

Nothing annoys me like people asking for advice on a public and then telling me whst I can and can't express an opinion on, sure if you know it all already why ask.

I haven't driven either. Both great looking cars. Good luck with which ever you get.

Quite often threads get derailed, often you get someone wondering which colour focus to buy only to be told that a golf is better, then you get a completely different conversation going and the original question doesn't get answered at all.

Anyhow, hopefully this post doesn't cause such a change of course.

I happened to be looking at the 520GT yesterday while getting my own car (520d Touring) serviced. Have to say if I had the choice between a new Touring and the GT I would have the Touring every time. I think the GT looks a bit gaudy and show offy. The new Touring on the other hand looks total class esp with right colour combination ie dark paint with light coloured leather

OP I would also share your concern about the extra 200kgs weight on the GT.

I know what you mean. It was by chance I drove them back-to-back and was surprised with the GT. It feels more like a "luxury car" than the 5 series. Agree on the colours.

I have not driver BMW for years, but newer ones appear as good internally as Audi, maybe even better (comfort) seats.
A mate had a 535d, incredible, but I simply do not need the performance.

Was in Joe Duffy and unexpectedly found myself really liking the new 520dGT in M Sport mode. I have a 5 series and the new GT just seemed to feel that bit more luxurious.

..and just to confirm I never liked the old one!

The GT rear styling does nothing for me, I find it horrible in fact.

Id be concerned over resale value too relative to a normal 5

The 5 gt looks better on the inside than the outside! but in M sport is an improvement. The interior is closer to the feel of a 7 and is airy due to the panoramic glass roof, but to drive, I felt it was much bigger and heavier feeling compared to the regular 5.
I only drove the 3 litre but would imagine that performance and economy of 2 litre would be worse than 5 touring due to the weight.
Due to its size and the slot like rear window, parking would be more difficult too.
If you were offered a better deal than the estate and prefer the drive of the gt than why not?
Re resale, it will defo be rarer than an estate 5 but is much less sought after apparently.
I was in my local BMW dealer two weeks ago and they were taking delivery of a white 520d gt m sport. He commented that the chassis number was really low, an indication, he said that so few right hand drive models have been made since its introduction when they first came out. The 2 litre is being brought out in an effort to widen its appeal.

There are a whopping 6 used examples for sale on carzone. I read somewhere that globably it hasn't been the sales success that BMW thought it would be. Seems to be an unsuccessful attempt to carve out a niche model where it looks like one isn't needed.

Isn't it about €3500 more like for like on an msport vs the touring?

I'd say its an availability thing?
