Dara Quilty (of spin 1038). He was in on ray Foleys podcast yesterday and said he was there for a meeting for the 7-9 show.

Either that or Louise Duffy. She's been covering for KC when he was away on his holidays recently and she even covered the Saturday afternoon show once or twice, which to me is a sign that she's being given a few trial runs.

Muireann O'Connell of 98FM also covered this slot a couple of times.

It is. I guess you have be be inside the communicorp family to get a gig on Today Fm from now on.

Interesting she's been hopping around a lot lately!

Sure is. Wonder if she is permanent, always thought she done a good job on spin and 98.

What did she do on SPIN? They're definitely announcing the new presenter next Monday. (I think it'll be Dara Quilty.)

Yes, and even more amusing how quickly the found a spot for Sarah Carey after she nearly succeeded in making the Moriarty Tribunal collapse after her leaking information for Denis.

I think Denis was caught on the hop by the speed in which the report was published in the end. It didn't give her a chance to resign her job in the Irish Times and start working for Newstalk well before the contents of the report was made public.

I also don't hear any politicians saying that O'Brien has far too much control of the media at the moment. Another Rupert Murdock.

She done some show at the weekend, don't remember the name of it now. Yeah I think it'll be Dara too. Will be interesting to see how he settles into to a more grown up station.

I also think it'll be Dara. He seems ready to take on a national slot. Would SPIN really let him compete directly with the Zoo Crew though by taking that slot? Also, maybe his humour is a bit childish for the more mature audience of Today FM. Based on his appearance on Foley's show last week saying he was in discussions, I think it'll be him. If this is true, I would have thought he'd make an announcement by now, considering how popular he and Brian are together. My only major doubt is that Michael Brett, SPIN's programme director, replied to a tweet by Dara saying that Brian would miss him if he reprised The Lock In.

If he does take the slot, Becki Miller has been covering breakfast on SPIN for the last week. Perhaps this is adapting her to a larger SPIN audience and getting her ready for a move to The Zoo Crew?
Also, Paul Bonass is covering TRL again this week (Yay!! :) ) so he could be in the process of getting the listeners used to him presenting at that time. Hopefully, he gets this slot soon.

Think Dara is a little juvenile for Today fm to be honest, his smart ass 'humour' might work on spin but it would become tiresome fairly quickly on today fm. I heard Clare Solan on today fm last night and really this girl isnt a jock, lets hope they get a solid jock for this slot long term.

I agree & would have thought Today FM would have it sorted also, or at least announced who was taking over. I'd love for Paul to take over TRL he is brilliant on air, I mean he is the definition of a CHR presenter.

Its definitely not Quilty. On Twitter, he has just said to Brian about next week's topics for discussion and also, his departure would have been announced by now. I wonder who'll get the slot now. Thoughts?

I'd say it could be clare Solan, she is doing that slot at the moment, while kc is off, it would make sense, she was with another communicorp stablemate in 98fm and perhaps they want to try a female presenter in this slot fulltime again. Personally i dont think she's strong enough, she lacks warmth and focus in her links which tend to be overlong and rambling. First rule of radio: if you're going to open the mic you'd better have a reason for doing so. Good luck to her though if she gets it.

If they wanted to go down the female presenter route, you'd think Louise Duffy would be the obvious candidate...

As for whether "juvenile" humour is suited to Today FM, Ray Foley was able to do a decent night time show straight out of Spin, and his humour is not what you'd call "sophisticated" all the time.

Personally, I'd love to see McLoone being moved back to his 7-10 slot, and a Blast type show to return between 10 and midnight.

NO NO & NO McLoone has the hump ever since him and KC swapped slots and he is annoying now!Altho a blast type show 10-12 would be nice Id prefer McLoone on at that time!

Duffy the obvious candidate ? not necessarily, its not an automatic assumption than one gets promoted from the early breakfast slot, also between clare solan and louise duffy , the former has a better voice while the latter is warmer, personally i think Dee woods from nova is better than both.

There seems to be one or two people on here very keen to get Louise Duffy a better time slot. Forget about it, NOBODY has ever been promoted from the today fm 5am show.

Louise is class though! Funny, self-deprecating, nice radio voice and hot too! Seems to get on well with the other presenters too, can't harm her chances of being promoted to be fair.

clare solan was there tonight again. I enjoyed the hour I heard before I left work. She said at least twice," tonight with Clare Solan," during seven to eight. Has she got the gig permanently ?

Must say I'm liking Clare solan. Very easy to listen to and doesn't play the same crap all night.

Louise Duffy is doing the 7-9pm gig the week after next and Phil Cawley is in for Louise next week and clare solan the week after that as she is on holidays. Ian Dempsey made the joke "your leaving the mornings."

I'm sure it was a joke as Louise said no she wasn't but then said "not that I'm Aware of."

So the week after next Solan is doing 5-7, and Duffy 7-9?

Swapping one for the other? Looks to me like they are trying each girl out on the evening slot, clearly a position is available, are they not meant to advertise the position publicly if there's a vacancy ?

Yeh otherwise I can't work out why they'd just randomly swap slots like that... maybe it's a prelude for things to come.

Well Louise has covered for KC when KC was on 7-9 so why would they need more looks/listens to her doing the gig ? And has Clare solan not done breakfast on 98fm at one point. ? So again they know what both can do.

To be quite honest I dont think either Louise Duffy or Clare Solan are particularly strong presenters, Duffy has done reasonably well considering she had no jock experience, until she got the early brekkie slot, which as a novice she was incredibly lucky to get in the first place, Solan is a solid jock but i find that she lacks warmth, possibly one of the reasons she no longer does breakfast on 98 fm, and her links tend to be overlong, rambling and unfocused.

The thing about today fm is they clearly feel they have to have a female presenter at some point in their schedule, you cant tell me that Duffy earned a shot at early breakfast based on her experience, so it has to be because she's female? Would love to know how Tim kelly and Phil Cawley felt about her leapfrogging them, and they might have reason to feel aggrieved again if she manages to get the 7-9pm slot.

As ive said before I think there arent enough women on irish radio so i would welcome a woman getting an evening slot on national radio but only if they are the best fit, not simply to fulfil a female presenter quota. Dee woods on nova is the best female presenter at the moment on radio , oh and jenny greene on 2fm, always enjoy listening to her.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,186 ✭✭✭Niles

Dunno, in a way I think Duffy's soft, gentle tones seem to suit the 5-7 slot. Can't really imagine her in a more prominent late morning/afternoon slot though.

Haven't heard enough of Solan to comment.
