Nah, it's a crap course. You wouldn't enjoy it. Glebe is just down the road in Trim. Much better value.

Yeah and over 30 is 2000e. One word "Bull...t". Fair enough to have juvenile membership etc but surely to jaysus it should be the same fee if you are under 30 or over 30.

Its actually a clever promotion. If they can get new young members into the club they will in all likelihood stay on into their thirties.

Is it though? The way I would see it is that there must be an older age profile there and they want to entice in a younger profile and that is definately a great incentive to do so, god knows how much the joining fee and subs were when it initially opened, but in this day and age the club golfer has become some what of a nomad, especially nowadays when enticements abound. I think at 1k if you are in your mid to late 20's it is a savage deal where you get to join a prestige club like Killeen castle, but when the time comes to pay double the subs of what they are used to paying, well then I'm not so sure Too many will be willing to dish out another 1k, unless of course they have a spare 1k of disposable income to spend on their golf budget. I am over ahem(age) and would drive up there tomorrow to join if I got membership for 1k as the other 1k for me would cover some of the driving expenses etc, but I don't think I would pay the 2k because when you add on expenses etc well it adds up.

This type of promotion is very evident this year. I received an email this week with an offer:
Under 28's €595 p.a Member must be under the age of 28 on or before the 1st of January 2013

Is this legal? Is this ageism? Also, I'd be pretty miffed if I was a member in a club for say 10 years, paid €1k subs every year & all my levies for improvements to course & clubhouse, turn 30, and then a younger person joins and by virtue of their age paid €595!

But I'm sure it was a democratic decision at an EGM/AGM by the members
(Probably only allowed by privately owned golf establishments)

Fully agree and similarly I'm a couple of years the wrong side of the age limit so can't benefit. Due to a change of location this year Killeen Castle would actually be closer to get to than my existing club and would similarly join in the morning if I could get it for 1k. 2k however is a totally different ball game and out of my league.

This is a N.A.M.A. course so if someone bought it from them they could change the terms and conditions of membership in a jiffy.
Fine course though and I had a few very good rounds on it last summer.

I think longer serving members in a lot of clubs will find themselves in this type of suitation in the years to come if they don't get new players in then they are in trouble. The only way to do that is to offer lower fees to attract them and hope that a % of them stay. The current members don't want to be hit with levies or higher fees so this is the best option for them. Lowering the age profile in any club is a good thing.Mike

I'd guess they are on thin Legal ground here from an ageism point of view. The norm would be a price differential between different categories of members ie Junior, student , Distance ,Adult , Voting etc.

If the Under 30 membership is an adult membership and they are charging different rates purely based on age then it may be seen as discrimination.

Perhaps some of the Legal Eagles might commnt ?

Maybe they should consider linking your sub to your handicap, the lower the handicap the lower the sub. It would incentivise people to work on their game and not be so focused on banditry and handicap minding. It already exists in the form of some big established clubs poaching + players for interclub and other prestigious competitions.

    This thread is worrying.

Without youth and women enticed in to the game, we are all finished.

Cheaper subs for U-30's is a great idea.

I think the argument is that subs should be tied to membership category, not age.
If I can be 31 and in the same category as someone who is 30 but they pay less than thats an issue.

Also FYI, blue font is impossible to read for anyone using the new Dark Boards.ie skin!

    I guess that's fair enough.

So Killeen should just call it something else. There are other clubs do the same. (28 is a regular age limit for "Junior" members as opposed to "Juvenile" members)
