Car Advice

Quick question regarding my car. I have 1997 saloon. 1.4 petrol. Very Reliable. I travel 40 miles round trip to work. So about 200 miles a week. I might do about 60 at the weekend so 260 in total.
Petrol is very expensive and I am wondering should I buy a diesel? I have kids as well so sometimes they are in the back at weekends. NCT is up in January.
Would it be worth getting a diesel?

Would one of these be ok for diesel?

I don't know much about cars so just some general advice.

    Thanks.

That's low mileage for a diesel, probably struggle to pay back the extra a diesel would cost over a petrol.

    12500 miles at 30 mpg, 1904 litres at 1.55 a litre: €2952
    12500 miles at 45 mpg, 1270 litres at 1.50 a litre: €1968

So you might save €1K a year. Tax on a pre-08 1.8 is 592 instead of your 358, so there goes 200+ of the saving already.

The Tourneo Connect is pretty crude, leaf springs (!!) at the back. OK for hauling cement, not very comfy for kids.

Sounds to me like in simple terms that you would be spending €100 to save €10. Diesel cars cost money to run too and I'm not talking about filling them up either.

It's also expensive at that age and mileage for what is a 9 year old van with rear windows and seats but I'm guessing the seller is looking to recoup some of the money that he/she has forked out on maintenance. It would also pose the question with me why the seller is trying to shift it after spending that sort of coin on it?

Thanks for the replies. The car I have now even reliable is old / have put a few bits in it and just concerned a bit about safety also.Could you recommend a car for the mileage I do?I am not fussy, Estate, Saloon, diesel or petrol.....Bubget about 4k, but I would be open to change on this reallyThanks.
