Question about TV licences.

Right, I have a computer and no TV. My housemates have a TV in the sitting room however. I never watch TV as I generally don't have the time nor the inclination to watch it. We recently got a letter reminding us to renew the licence.

Here's the thing, I'm not exactly sure my house mates actually need to pay for it since they're only watching Slovakian stations as they are both Slovakian. If they were watching Irish television, sure, I could see them having to pay for the licence but since they're not or have ever watched Irish television as far as I am aware (They have a satellite dish on the back of the house but there is no aerial anywhere in the house), should they have to pay for the licence?

They have a television so a licence is needed. It doesn't matter what they are watching on it. They could be watching static and still need a licence,

The license is required if you are in possession of a device that can receive broadcast television signals. Even if such a device is in need of repair.

Not sure if a satellite dish on it's own qualifies. (IIRC it does)

But satellite receivers and saorview boxes qualify as do TV cards for computers.)

If you are a UPC customer you need a license for their set top box because they transmit live broadcasts. Since they also transmit analog through the cable you'd need a license if you had an analog TV or VCR )

The only bit I'm not sure of is if you have an analog only television and don't a set top box or cable installed. That situation would only have applied for since the 24th and there is a new license coming in anyway to close any such loophole. (since there are deflector schemes running analog in Donegal till the end of the year I'd reckon they'd nail you with that)

If you have a TV that receive broadcasts, whether they are made, you must have a TV licence. An analogue-only TV needs a licence. A broken analogue-only TV needs a licence. A TV needs a licence. If it has a receiver and a screen, it is a TV and needs a licence.

Technically speaking the only broadcast TV an analog TV can get in Europe except is the few remaining deflector schemes in Donegal and then only for the next two months.

In two months time it won't be a TV.

(of course this argument only works if the Judge accedes to it)
