Jobless Swedes paid to move to Norway

A small Swedish town with rising youth unemployment is paying for young folk to move to another country (Oslo, Norway) to get a job. Included in the package is the train ticket, one month's hostel accomodation and assistance in obtaining employment. Norway has an unemployment rate of 3% vs Sweden's 8%. So far 100 young people have taken advantage of this "pat on the back" initiative. Telegraph - Sweden pays jobless youth to move to Norway

So, when will this happen here?

The way things are going here I think a tax/charge/levy payable by people leaving is far more likely.

    Why should it?

It's artificially reducing unemployment in one country while adding to it in another country.

What's the craic if you don't get a job, is it a free holiday?

Tbh if I was unemployed for two years in a small town in north sweden and I was offered a chance, expenses paid, to go to big city Oslo for a month, I'd jump at it.

Interesting, paying some of the natives to leave while immigrants still arrive. Applies to most EU developed countries.

Love the quote from the local employment office.
Mohamed Chabchoub, head of the local employment office in Söderhamn, defended the programme, explaining that it is in-line with the employment service's mission.

"We're not sending them away; we're helping them take a step forward and to have a richer experience," he told the broadcaster.

"They get some economic security and at the same time we hope they come back with renewed strength. It's not a kick, but a pat on the shoulder."

Norway is a much richer and more prosperous country, there's probably jobs available. If the people want to head over to Oslo then it's a blessing being sent free of charge. However if it's mandatory then it's a bit harsh being sent out of your home country.

If unemployment is 3%, then Norway has full employment. There are jobs available within the country.

This isn't another begrudgingly Irish 'dey tuk ur jobz !!' situation.

If they don't get a job, Norway pays for them to go to Finland. Then Finland pays for them to go to Denmark, Denmark to Germany, Germany to Poland etc etc until they are finally sent back to Sweden. And then it starts again. It's a perfectly logical plan with absolutely no faults.

Pretty common for Swedes to go work in Norway. The pay there is a lot better than it is in Sweden.

Cant see anything similar happening here though.

Interesting to note, that it can make things difficult for young Norwegians to gain valuable work experience.
