    Hi,
was looking into buying a controller so I could scratch and do spin backs.

I was just wondering what the DJ apps are like for android, iPAD? If they are really good you probably don't need a purpose built controller?

    Comments welcomed.

Android suffers a lot from latency, so doing anything musically in real time is pretty much impossible, it's an area where Apple definitely come out on top in that particular battle

Yes I see that. But I believe the google nexus is good here.

Looks like Apple wins this one.

I hooked my iPad into Traktor and Ableton. Its pretty tricky to do as you have to go from various formats and eventually to Midi.

Biggest issue: You have to connect by wifi to the laptop. So you need a network at all times e.g. A router. Its alot of kit to carry. So your going to get latency. Control is good but not tactile. Your not pressing a button or holding a switch. It feels terrible versus my LaunchPad. You will not be to able to spin or scratch. End of.

I'm fairly techy and thought it could emulate the likes of Jazzmutant Lemur. It looks the part but doesn't play it. Its 'usable' for Ableton and probably is a tad better than the LaunchPad.

Same applies for any Apps. You cannot use them for any serious type of DJing. Purely for messing on the couch or killing time.

What about if I got a google nexus which is 150 cheaper and then got a controller? Do I still have latency issues?

The djay app on the iPad is a viable, and extremely good, option for general DJing including beatmixing & a limited but quite decent amount of effects, but scratching would be a definitive no no due to latency issues.

Just wondering... On ableton I know from talking to people that you have "warp" your tracks before you can beat mix seamlessly. On the IPAD DJ apps you do not? Why is this? Is it just not as seamless as ableton or is it just better at automatically syncing the tracks?

This is a good app for just messing about on your phone :)

No app will ever be able to emulate the beat sync of Traktor or Ableton. Which coincidentally, Ableton in my experience is rubbish for auto recognising beats. You generally have to go back and define / warp it yourself. Traktor on occasion gets it wrong to.

Your money would be far better spent on a decent controller, if your serious about DJing. You can't properly DJ off an App as you can't monitor or split the channels, unless you connect and control a proper piece of DJ software, which means you need a wireless network and a sound card, which a decent controller will do anyway.
