mazda 6 overheating

My 03 mazda 6 2l diesel is occasionally over heating and there is no real heat from the in car heater.

the car over heated on me after driving 40 km at 140km/h and it was spouting coolant all over the engine. Straight away i though its the head gasket but my mechanic warned me that i need a grand ready for that.
I have been told that first, he needs to do a few checks on the radiator, (he thinks its stuffed) the thermostat, the water pump and burping the system for the in car heater. That will cost €200 or €300 which if its not the issue its going to be a waste of money that i could have saved towards the head gasket!
Has anyone experienced this before witha mazda 6 diesel?

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

It's a miracle it lasted 9 years. The Mazda diesel is one of the worst engines made in the past decade. But maybe the pessimist in me is wrong and it is just something cheap / simple :(

Sorry if that is not what you were hoping to hear :(

me thinks, water pump failed or thermostat stuck closed. ... if something else not wrong. if yourself could get thermostat off car, put it in cup, and pour over boiled water, if it opens(slowly in 20 - 40 seconds) , it means it is working , then have to check water pump, not sure how they fitted on mazda , could be complicated remove it (timing belt off work) .

new thermostat would cost 15 -25 quid, new waterpump ... could be around 60 -80 quid.

    A-frickin'-men.

    A 9yr old still-running Mazda 6 diesel is dodo-rare.

OP, get it checked out, but be wary of a big bill.

Minor thread hijack, but am I right in saying the petrol Mazda 6s are pretty much bulletproof, and the newer 2.2 diesels are ok too? Looking at these as a future purchase (probably the current model), but obviously not with an engine that devours itself.

The petrol 6s are pretty reliable alright and seem to have no major common issues.

The newer diesels still have DMF issues and DFP issues with unused diesel being sent to the sump where it contaminates the engine oil.

Disclaimer: So my local mechanic told me!

Petrols are great. Tbh, I don't think their modern diesels can be trusted. The last good one they made is back in the Premacy. Or, the ABB-supercharged 626. Gosh - remember them ?

I agree, my 03 Mazda diesel packed in last year less than 2 years after replacement fuel injectors cost me €2,500! I am sure that not all go so quickly but be warned.

I'm going to get the whole timming belt, water pump, fan and thermostat checked.. Willing to spend a bit of money towards it cause it's a nice drive, and I'm running it on B50 so €40 diesel gets me 450 miles and that's good plus I love the space the estate has to offer. Fingers crossed!
