    Folks
Sister has agreed a price in principle for a car with a private seller, who "Brings in cars for sale", you know the type.

Car was found on carzone last Thurs, dead on motor, drove it and feels good, body work and engine nice and clean, no damage, did plenty of checks on it.
2 things, the tires were marked "as new" on the ad, not new, probably 75% wear, one had a cut.
Mileage had 6k miles more on it, than the advert.

Anyway, she haggled a price, he came down but not to where she hoped. She said she would think about it. Then text off him, ok meet you 1/2 way. She came up a little more and texted him back.
He replied, ok you VRT it and put new tire on and I will do it for X price.
She said she would think about it.

Then I decided to glance around DD, and low and behold there is another car, same year, model, spec, age and EXACT same pictures.
Except that its had lower mileage and higher price, not much lower mileage but 500 euro higher than his advertised price.

    Any thoughts?

1 part makes me think, walk away. The other makes me think, just using "stock photos" until he lands the car in Ireland.

I thought it was illegal for anyone in the republic that wasn't a dealer to sell on an imported car without first VRTing it.

    +1

If the seller is free and easy with the legalities like that, how can you be sure that the car is otherwise genuine ? The seller is obviously avoiding their legal responsibilities. How will they react if the buyer has a problem in a month's time ?

Is there a verified service history with the car ?

Walk away. Too many nice cars out there to pass on for the convenience of a dodgy one. What car is it and one of us here will find a better few examples to check out.

Also if they are not a dealer it is a private sale and therefore sold as is.

    Thanks guys.

    2009 Ford Focus diesel 1.6TDCI

He has said he will give a "written 6 month warranty".

He has rolled back now and said he has to do the VRT ;)

I did some "checks" on him as I know lads from where he is from and the 3 lads all said he is sound. Then again selling a motor to another person mightn't be sound! :)

He has another couple of cars for sale also at the minute.

OP, you don't mention anything about a verifed service history on the car. And I mean did you ring the garages that stamped it? Don't just accept a stamped service book as verified as you can buy one of them on ebay. If the service history is missing then assume the worst as unlike here over in the UK most cars come with a documented service history.

Also is the seller a registered trader/dealer? If not then the 6 month warranty may not be worth the paper it is written on. That and the fact he wanted your sister to do the VRT herself would indicate that he wants to stay below Revenue's radar.

Has backround check been done on the car, does he have documents to prove he actually owns it ?

Simple stuff yet crucially important, as car could easily be stolen

    Right lads.
Background check done on it and its not stolen or outstanding finance.

Waiting on the FSH, he has it but it wasn't with him.

I am wary, so I will be watching this one :)

Irrespective of everything else, the fact it isn't VRT'd is more than reason enough to walk away.
You really should know what you are talking about before posting.

If the trader is registered with Revenue, they can advertise unregistered cars for sale. The car has to be VRTed by the trader on behalf of the buyer before hand-over.

The seller wanted the buyer to VRT the car.
Before your post, the seller said he would VRT the car, and you said "irrespective of everything else...".

The simple fact is that your post was wrong. Wriggle as much as you like.

I won't be engaging with you further on this, as I have already seen on the L-driver thread that you are like a dog with a bone.

Feel free to have the last word....

Just another update on this, its actually funny now :)

Sis got a text off him "Brother has lost the log book, but I took it to the VRT office this morning and they gave me a letter and a receipt to say all is ok, but I have to bring them the log book next week when I get it, but you can collect the car Saturday".
Sis - "Its ok, get the VRT done and let me know when full Irish reg is on it, and send me the FSH"

Seller - "Ok, it will be Tues before the VRT is fully done anyway, you can take the car then".

So off she goes and rings the VRT office, the girl was sound, gave her the UK reg number, "Oh that car is under Mrs X, to be VRT'd at 5pm today"

So the seller is prob passing on the car to be VRT'd by someone else, and they are hiding from Revenue.

As for him been in there this morning at VRT, and now it seems he wasn't, that one I can't figure!

I'd walk away, too much carry on for my liking. There are plenty of other Focus diesels out there so she can well afford to leave this one go.

I don't get why you're persisting with this one?

I'm close to pulling plug to be honest.
The ONLY things that are keeping me interested, about 1%!, is that I have 4 people who know him and have vouched he is a good lad.
The UK report I got checks out with the car and all that adds up.
The car drove fine and didn't throw up any issues on the body check or engine check, needs 1 new tire and that is been done.

The VRT thing and the way its been handled though is shoddy to say the least. He is probably switching around the cars he buys to others PPS to avoid paying tax.

I call shenanigans. You need the V5C to VRT the car, they won't allow anything else, nor will they give you a letter to say it's grand.

If you don't walk away from this you deserve to get stung tbh, because at this stage it's glaringly obvious it stinks. I wouldn't be too fast to believe anyone's opinion, Jimmy Savile's familly thought he was great too until a few weeks ago.

Brought in all my cars from the UK so understand the forms needed.

I have told her to walk away, so out of my hands ;)

Wise move. Many clean Focus's in the UK to bring in yourself for her. Worth her while give you €500 plus your expenses for the job, better known car then.
