Failed NCT

    Hello this is my first post here so I apologize in advance if it's unclear or in the wrong area, basically I just failed my nct this morning my rack and pinion was bad which annoyed me because I just had it in with a mechanic and he changed my steering boots, anyway I was wondering could anyone throw me out a a rough estimate on how much it would cost to get a second hand or new one and help or advice would be greatly appreciated oh and im based in waterford

    We can guess if you like but only a mechanic will give you a real quote.
    Do you need to replace the whole thing? What did it fail on?

    Sorry forgot to mention about the car it's 01 opel corsa 1L and ye the whole rack and pinion needs to be replaced I was told by the guy in the nct not to try repair it

    I think the mechanic's right. Probably cost more than the car's worth to repair/replace it.

    Have you got a second opinion from another mechanic? How feasible is it to repair, and how feasible is it to get a second-hand R & P from a scrapyard?

    You need to do a bit more digging, OP.

    might worth find professionally reconditioned one. i got for my toyota avensis for 160 euro reconditioned, used at that time cost in 70 -80 euro area. have no idea how much goin cost fitting, i was quoted 150 for work, but i did myself.

    The guy in the nct said it was worn so bad that it couldnt be repaired I think he could have said they were leaking if that is possible , I had badly ripped steering booths and drove a lot before repairing them an I reckon they might have helped damaging the rack.

    Can you go to the bother of putting up FULL technical information, as per your NCT report document, in relation to why your car failed?

    Nobody has a chance of helping you with the information you have provided...
