My club are having an interesting comp this weekend. You can only use 4 clubs and one off them has to be a putter so I'm not sure which ones to use.

I am thinking make 4 iron, 8 iron and a sand wedge but not sure.

    What would you use???

What clubs would you use?? (choose 3 only!!) 283 votes

Last year we had one of these but u didn't have to bring a putter, good fun it was 3 clubs for us. I took the driver, 7 and putter as the 7 iron got me on the green on all the par 3's. And driver 7 iron was good for most of the par 4's and i could also chip with it.
It is good when you only have 1 iron to try and leave yourself 150 to the front of the green with every drive so it was a case of going after it on some holes and holding back on others.

3 wood from tee, 7 iron from fairways and pitching wedge.

I did it for a challenge with a couple of friends on back 9 in our place. Only 3 clubs though - 3iron, 6iron and putter. Its a nice change and my ascore wasn't too bad!

Low hybrid for tee shots and long approaches, 7 iron for mid approaches, PW for anywhere inside 100yards.
They want you to use a putter to save the greens from too much of a cutting up perhaps?

Changed my mind from what I entered above when I had a think of the holes on my home course.

I had Hybrid/8iron/SW but have changed to Hybrid/7iron/GW(which is by far my favourite club)- I love when I see 90 yards on the range finder!

Need the 7iron for the Par 3's

    Driver, 5 iron and PW.

need 5iron at least for 3 of our 4 par 3s and sometimes on the 4th too.
I really wish we had one 100m par 3 hole for variation.

Hybrid, 6 iron & 9 iron for me

    3 Hybrid; 7-Iron & SW for me...

Hybrid for tee shots & longer shots from fairway & the 7 & SW are probably the two most versatile clubs in my bag... might actually give this a try over the winter on my home course.

    Driver - 7 iron - gap wedge.

Perfect setup for me for around athlone :)

we had one of these last year with just 3 clubs. I took the same 3 clubs and putted with the blade of the gap-wedge

18* Hybrid, would use it for 15/18 tee shots, and probably a few approaches on par 4's.
7 Iron, Use it on the other 3 tee's and would use it on 10/18 approaches.
PW, great for chipping and anything from 120 in.

Would you not find taking a driver incredibly limiting? You get to use it in maybe 15 holes at most?

What if you hit a poor tee shot? You are then left with only a 7 iron from maybe 250m? or under a tree etc?

    Would have said 3 iron (4 will do)/ 8 iron/ SW

3 iron will get me to about 160 on any par 4, and even 50 on the 2 shorter ones and the SW is by far my most valued club as I should get within 6 foot from anywhere inside 100 yards. 8 iron will do for 3 of the par 3's but would need the 3 iron for the 2 long par 3's. Lot of doglegs out our way too so the driver is only needed on maybe 4 or 5 holes at most

Edit: Played a comp like this before (3 club) and took these exact ones, putted with the SW, and shot 35 points off 5. Was happy enough :D

Haven't played in one of these for a while - in my club they were called the 3 club challenge, but there was no requirement to select a putter.

For your comp - 4 Wood, 6 Iron and Pitching Wedge for me.

Well, not to sound like I'm up my own hole or anything, but I don't hit many bad Tee shots with driver(hardly ever, its my most reliable club) . Plus I can vary the distance I hit it, choking down on the club or hitting it easier.

Besides, with Athlone, there's 14 holes where I would be using driver [ 4 par 3's ]. If I was playing my normal game, it would be 12 holes and two 5 woods off the tee, but I can hit driver on those 2 holes, just take a different line.

I'm sure for other golf courses this might not be the optimum setup, but for athlone, it's the one that suits best for me :)

I'd imagine you are but not many carry either these days so OP left it out

    Thanks for the replies folks.

Most people thinking along the lines I was.

Also you can use any clubs you like I just didn't make every option on the poll.

I'm conflicted between the hybrid and the 4 iron as I just got the hybrid and haven't gotten used to it just yet. Might hit the range later to get used to it some more.

Our course is quite long (but reasonably straight) with varying length par 3's. Think the short game will be tested anyway!

For me it would be 5 wood will get me up to 210-220 yards allowing me to reeach the longer Par 3's as well as getting me to the green in 2 for the long Par 4's. My 7 iron puts me 160 yards for most approaches to the Par 4's and My Gap wedge for everything inside 100 yards.

I'm surprised with the Driver stats... but then again, if I was only allowed 13 clubs the driver would be left at home :)

When you get used to it the hybrid/rescue is much easier to hit from the rough than a 4.
Its also useful around the green.

These are great competitions to help you think your way around the course. You'll be amazed at the number of pars you have because you dont have the clubs to put yourself in trouble (i.e. driver!)
