if i was to cancel my ROI sky supscription would i still get the rte, Tv3 channels etc since these are now considered 'free to air' in ROI? (in the north if you cancel your sky subscription you still get the free to air channels)
any other posters know what the score is on this?

No the Irish channels are part of the Sky pack and not free to air.

However you can get SAORSAT and RTE is free to air on it you need a different dish and box however and TV 3 and 3e are not included.

Plus there is SAORVIEW which has all the Irish channels.

I had considered Saorsat but not having TV3 is the problem and the Saorview signal is non-existent in my area

The only way you can get TV3 is through a pay TV provider if you can't get a Saorview signal.

Or you can watch all the Irish channels on the net here.

I cant get saorview signal in my area either in Donegal so does that mean I will not be able to get tv3 at all unless I pay for it???
    Shocking!!!
We have to get a saorsat box but do we need a 2nd dish, we currently only have sky free to air channels and a dish for that

    Not very helpful!!!!!!

We have bought the equipment and it doesnt work.
Why should we have to pay for what everyone else gets for free.

That's Sky equipment to receive a Sky service.

You do know that most of the programmes on TV3 are simultaneously on ITV (HD)?

If it's specifically an Irish made program you want to watch on TV3 wouldn't you be better watching it on the TV3 player or using http://www.aertv.ie/?

If I were you I'd get the dish/offset LNB for Saorsat + UK FTA and watch the things from TV3 that I would want from the web.

Paying Sky for free channels would embitter me.

What I meant was that we bought a saorview box and a brand new saorview enabled television and now they dont work.

We have to pay extra now to go and get new satellites and different boxes and even at that we wont have TV3 which we previously did have prior to

going digital and the only way we would get it to by paying for it.

No watching on internet not an option was we do not have broadband.

    Well that's unfortunate.

If I was in your situation I'd take the Saorview box back and put the money towards getting the Saorsat/UK FTA system and bite my tongue as regards not having TV3 but that's easy for me to say because I think TV3 is utter shite.

The new TV will be useful for the HD channels so is probably a good purchase regardless.

we used to get rte 1, rte 2, tg4 and tv3 through analogue (and BBC1, BBC2 and UTV but they still work through analogue)

Some other family members who live in different areas of Donegal also have this problem where they used to get all chanels through analogue reception but cannot get saorview reception!!!

If you did then you should get them on Saorview. You mentioned about buying a Saorview box and TV but you dont need both. Try connecting the aerial directly to the TV
(and BBC1, BBC2 and UTV but they still work through analogue)
Thats just nonsense as the analogue has been turned off now.

I'm in Donegal and haven't heard of anything like this...not to say that it hasn't happened though.

Edit: Have you scanned for all the digital channels?

Excuse me, I have had two different workmen from different well known electrical stores out to look at my televisions and to no avail. If you know any better please come and help me rather than accusing me spouting "nonsense"

My neighbours had the same problems as I am having and have had saorview trained people out to look at them. As are my grandparents who are after getting a saorsat satellite and new television so that they can watch television where they were able to receive all channels beforehand ( reception might not have been the best because they are in a rural mountainous area but you would happily watch it)

And yes I am still receiving bbc1, bbc2, utv and channel 4 by analogue as I turned on my old television yesterday and these channels worked!!!!!!!

The reason I bought a saorview box and a new television is because different family members wanted to watch things on two different televisions at the same time and my old television is not saorview enabled.

Therer are still deflectors fed from sky boxes running in Donegal and elsewhere.

Receiving these channels on analogue doesn't always mean you will get Saorview. Parts of North Cork where I install are now Saorsat areas even though the channels were all available from Mullighanish with good quality analogue picture before switch off.

They got good quality TV3 & TG4 from Mullighanish but can't get Saorview?
    How come?

Where are you in Donegal? I am told that some analogue deflectors are still operational until the end of December and you may be receiving the UK channels from it.

You do not need a 2m dish.

In good weather a 40cm dish works in Wales right up to the point where interference with the French transponder would jam any dish.

A 1m dish is recommended so that you can continue to get signal even if it's pouring down.

15% of the population didn't get TV3 because TV3 didn't pay for those transmitters . They aren't on saorsat because - surprise surprise - they won't pay for it.

What sort of external aerial are you using ?

Did you ever get TG4 ?

What are the neighbours using ?

Have you looked coverage on the www.saorview.ie site ?
including checking on top of local hills or other places you could possibly run a cable too

Saorsat is only worth considering if you like satellite or have ruled out any possible aerial.

The channels you are getting on analog should go at the end of the year.

If near the UK it may be possible to get some Irish channels on the NIMM thingbuzzer.

One place in Particular is Lombardstown, not far from Mallow and not so far from Mullighanish either, most houses had a good analogue signal on all channels except for the occasional one. It's now a Saorsat area and I have installed a few Saorsat dishes in the area, I tried for saorview signal first at each house but got no useable signal from any of the transmitters I go for when I have problems with Mullighanish signal (Mitchellstown, Spur Hill and Maghera)

There is a hill blocking signal from Mullighanish and although analogue was by and large very good and there were few problems getting a good TV3 picture, Saorview is just non existant there.

Similar reported in Wicklow from Kippure, analogue signal previously but no Saorview signal.

Unfortunately many people have bought new TV's in this area expecting them to work because of how good the analogue picture was previously but they didn't check the coverage map. They now have to fork out for Saorsat if they want RTE free to air. Saorsat didn't seem to be mentioned at all during the switch over and most people seemed to be totally unaware of its existance and the possibility that they could be living in an area where they needed to switch to Saorsat rather than Saorview.

These people are mostly elderly and have no access to the internet so they just took at face value what the ads with Gaybo etc said about the switch over. The local people in the area from Macra etc didn't seem to get the message across to people about the need for Saorsat if they were even aware of it themselves. It would have been better to involve local installers in the local information drives rather than the groups chosen for the Outreach Digital Switchover Programme. I have probably forgotten more about aerials and dishes than these people will ever know.

A friend of mine suggested during the Tommy and PJ campaign that a third animal, a friendly white elephant, be added to promote Saorsat. For some reason it wasn't taken up..

All joking aside, given that a number of analogue relays were switched off and not replaced, there should have been a Saorsat awareness campaign in the areas likely to be affected. Of course, this is a legacy of RTENL's sweetheart deal with $ky.
