Only get decent results if the car is has a turbocharger and the quality of the map.

If you go to reputable company who knows the limits of the car out of the box then there's no real issue.

    Remap, yes.

    Chipping is soooooo 90's.

Anyway if you have a decent car that will benefit from it go ahead.

Also bear in mind that you will need to declare it to your insurance and potentially face an increased premium as it's a modification.

If you don't and you crash and the insurers engineer inspects, then you will not be covered and will be personally liable for damages.

I know one individual who ended up personally liable for €182,000 and has gone off the grid to avoid paying.

    Do they check ECU's?

Not being smart btw. Just wondering would they routinely check an ECU even if the car had no other mods.

I dont think you or your friend know what each of those terms refers to.

Chipping is when you remove the stock ECU ROM chip and replace it with another one with a different engine mapping burned to it. This is "old" tech as newer cars have OBD2 ports with direct access to the ECU mapping and can rewrite over said port.

Remapping is re-writing the ECU with a new engine map directly, through a diagnostic port (usually the OBD2 port). On modern cars (ie 1999 upwards) its not necessary to remove or alter anything physically to change the map.

If you can remap a car's ECU, then you dont need to chip it all obviously. Its like asking can a Smartphone do both IRDA and Bluetooth.
