You'll have to know the year before you can know what oil you'll need.

So you are doing an oil change on a van you don't even know the year of, let alone the correct oil spec or anything about the oil filter?

This begs the question of how have you ended up in a position where you are doing this job?

May as well just horse in some 15W40 and hope for the best. Sounds like a dodgey job already sure.

    How is my comment rude?

In my opinion if anyone here is being rude it is you. If you come on here looking for free technical advice then at least make an effort to provide the basic details needed for people to answer your question.

VW 505 01/50700 is a specification of oil. It'll be written on the oil bottle in the factors.

OP you should take a step back and see that two of the most respected mechanics/car experts have asked a simple question in a non rude way.

They are simply trying to help you, so maybe let them maybe you have an engine code?

Seanike for an 08 1.9 TDI Touran would you be able to send me the same type of data please.

    I think 5W40 fully synth

This has got to be a wind up surely?

If not then I feel sorry for whoever owns the van that you are "servicing" tomorrow :pac:

There are far too many engine codes and VW oil specs based on those codes.
There are old injection pump models, PD models and now common rail models.

You simply won't be able to decide which oil you need until you know the details of the van.

If your going to try to work on more peoples car then you'll soon learn the questions you need to ask when they call you. I mean how did you even tell the person how much it would be?

Same specs for the Touran as Seanike posted previously in the thread, if you are on variable service intervals then you need VW 507.00 spec. If you are on fixed intervals (which in my opinion you should be) then you can either use 507.00 or 505.01 spec.

    505.01 is a 5w40 full synthetic.
    507.00 is a 5w30 full synthetic.

But be careful when buying oil as not all oils of those grades will meet the required specs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,089 ✭✭✭JAMES VTI S

    ok thanks
i have no idea what the 505/507 is
i have always gone by grade

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,728 ✭✭✭George Dalton

You can't go by grade alone on modern cars. We stock three different types of 5w30 full synthetic oil. They all meet different specs even though they are the same grade.

Grade is only one part of oil type. 5w30, 10w40 etc represent the viscosity of the oil based on temperature, load and use and the VW505.01 or whatever is the specification of the oil based on the manufacturer's requirements for the engine.

Basically, just because 2 engines can use a 5W30 oil, doesn't mean that the same 5W30 would be suitable for both engines.
