we are hopefully going over to wood burning stove soon and was wondering is it possible to clean out the old plastic oil tank to use as a water collector for the garden etc?just thought it'd be a handy thing to connect up the guttering to.

I would say NO,as the oil will be embedded into the plastic of the tank, and therefore you would be polluting the soil in and around your garden.

Sell it 2nd hand on adverts or done deal and buy a few 1000 litre IBC water tanks for 60-70 euro a tank.

You can buy a 210 litre rainwater butt kit (barrell, stand, divertor kit) for 50 euro in a builders providers.:)
