Underwhelming World MMA Awards 2012

    The voting has opened for the 2012 World MMA awards and it's made me realise it's been a pretty poor year for the sport in my opinion. Mainly the two categories of fighter of the year.

    Charles "Mask" Lewis Fighter of the Year
    Daniel Cormier
    Nate Diaz
    Benson Henderson
    Jon Jones
    Ronda Rousey

    I don't want to discredit any fighter but I just feel if you run through their achievements in 2012 it's very little to previous years:

    Decision win over Josh Barnett
    Submission win over Jim Miller
    Two close decsion wins over Edgar
    Decision win over Rashad and TKO of Vitor
    Two submission wins.


    I don't fully understand why Mighty Mouse and Anderson aren't nominated for this one. But my main point is I think the acheivements are pretty poor compared to that of a few years ago. I know the UFC has had another injury plague this year meaning champions such as GSP, JDS, Cruz, Aldo can't compete as much but even those nominated as breakthrough fighters I thought were very poor. With the exception of Barao I don't think many of them have achieved too much either this year. I know they have the best fighters etc. but I still think the Zuffa bias at this awards is incredible. Also how are Cage Warriors not nominated for promotion of the year? Looking forward to the nominations being announced for the bloodyelbow, fighthounds and other just publications awards.

    You're probably not going to get a more just publication than FightersOnly to be honest.
