Windows key recovery

I have a hard drive that will not boot into windows, it will run for maybe 10 mins when connected to my desktop. Also the laptop the hard drive is from will run with a live cd in the drive. I need to recover the windows key, the sticker is worn out as usual, any ideas please.

There are tools on Hirens boot cd which can grab the key out of the disks registry, not going to link to it as there are questionable legalities associated with it. If you can get into the machine for long enough through Jellybean onto a USB Key and that would also do it
