VAT on buying from the north

The in-laws are doing up the house at the mo and got a good price on stuff from a company in the north. The sales man told them they could get the vat back if they deliver it to them. I didn't know you could do that or is this just salesman speak? I heard you can get vat back if you have a vat number, but don't know how that works. Was looking at tractors in the north as they are a good bit cheaper than down here.

sounds like a bit of waffle to me. If you are vat registered in the south then you can supply your vat number to the northern ireland supplier and they dont have to charge vat. however you would never be entitled to to claim back vat on doing up a house in the first place if this is your main residence.
I have heard about a lot of people using a vat number to avoid paying vat on importing a tractor from the uk/ni. if you had a revenue audit you wouldnt have a leg to stand on as the invoice would be made out to who ever owned the vat number and if that wasnt you then you would be in a lot of trouble. also I think it would be very easy for the revenue to do a check on these type of people becase the english supplier should be submitting details of what the exported from the uk to eire to the renglish revenue and they share this with the irish revenue. very easy to cross check details here.

i use the oul boys vat no. all the time - its a godsend, 20% off! tell the rep u'll go with him if he can sort out the vat. chances are he can swing a vat no. off some business he supplies down here or even he will make one up!

thing is the invoice is send to the owner of the vat number not to you. hard to answer where the money from your accounts go to in this way. I put all money transactions through my accounts so it wouldnt be good for the likes to me.
