Opinion time please. Trying to sort footpaths.

I have 2 choices as I see it:
    (1) footpath around house in traditional manner. Basically in contact with the house.
    (2) leave a space between the house and footpath. This could be finished with a chip in keeping with colour if house. Space would only be in the region of 300mm.

Downside of 2 is the expense of having to shutter both sides of the path. 1 provides better rodent protection in my opinion.

    Thoughts?

Better to have "normal" footpath to asist in keeping the EPS as dry as possible. Make the rainwater run off away from the building
