Right so, woe of woes, my flash broke at the hot shoe at the weekend  Anyone any ideas if this can feasibly be repaired or is it not worth the cost? (it's a 580 ex2 by the way)

Photos attached to give an idea...

They're designed to break fairly easily and be fairly trivial to replace, search for the part on EBay, likely it's a 5 minute job.

Thanks Daire, I've checked and you're right as it appears they do break fairly easily but this prevents them wrecking the camera itself which I guess is something! Looks like the fixing of it could be straightforward but I didn't find anything on ebay. However I did find a replacement parts place in the USA that sells them so should be able to get it sorted for a total of 90 dollars hopefully!! Cheers :)

yeah it's a deliberate breakpoint. The whole linkage is a bit cumbersome and there's a lot of leverage there if (say) the top of the flash was hit by something. Better the flash mount breaks than the flash body, or the hotshoe getting ripped off the top of the camera :-)

That EBay search seems to bring up a few results, and you could ping zerohamster as well ...

Thanks again Daire, I am a lot more optimistic about it than I was when I got up this morning. Will have a look at those references and there's now also the possibility of successfully reconnecting the wires which is not bad!
