    Hey folks,

I have a problem with the fan in my car. Basically when I turned the dial this morning, the air blew through the vents. Now this evening its not working at all.

Any idea what the problem might be? Its a 07 VW Passat 1.9 tdi

Did you check the fuses? If the fuse is ok next stop the resistor for the fans its in the blower motor.

had the same problem with one and it was just out uf warranty. the motor for changing from air-con to heat and blowing is gone. it lives under the dash on the lhand side. it is about a days work in the garage iirc and cost me somewhere in the region of 500 euro. this included a small goodwill allowance from vw.was a fault in some of them

Same problem with passat. Put on heat and when heat is switched off, heat still comes out vents. Same with air con, car gets too cold and when air con is turned off, cold air still coming through vents. Was told by main dealer that big job cause dashboard has to come out. Not willing to spend 500.00 euro on a problem that should not exist on an 07 car. will have to put up with it.

I would rather tape up the vents :p

Jaysus theres no way Im shelling out 500 for a problem that shouldnt happen to a 07 car!
Is it something that has to be done in a main dealer or can an ordinary garage do it?

The €500 problem is a different problem by the sound of things.

It sounds to me like you have a fuse or fan resistor problem.

When you turn on the fan can you hear it working or not?

Hey George, no I cant hear anything. The dials light up but nothing else. I can feel heat though in the car when its set to high. Just no air coming through.

Then you are looking at a fuse, fan resistor or heater fan problem. None of these will cost anything like €500 to sort out. If I were you I would steer clear of the main dealer with this issue as they will likely charge you a lot of labour for what should be a simple and easy diagnosis.

Nice one George. Thanks a million. Will take a look at the fuse in the morning. Is the fan resitor/heater fan easy to sort out or would I be looking at a garage fix?

They are easy to change but you need to figure out what the problem is first. Do you have a multimeter and/or know how to use one?

    Folks,

Does anyone know which fuse would control the fan for the car? Tried to follow the manual but couldnt find the right one.
Would it be in the engine fuse box?

Doesnt look like the correct one. The 2 fuse panels dont seem to match up with the user manual for the car either!
I can hear the blower doing something but it doesnt blow any air.

Can you post a picture of your fuse board? The ones in the photo's is the fuse box on the driver side of the dash. Failing that you could pull them one by one and see are they blown or use a multimeter on them.

Have a look at this link http://www.justanswer.com/vw-volkswagen/5cjy2-volkswagen-passat-2-0t-need-fuse-box-diagram-2008.html

Could also be the brushes on the motor. Mine stopped working ages ago, so took out the motor removed the brushes and put them back in backwards ( they were offset so worn at an angle and could no longer maintain contact). Back up and running, so ordered a set on eBay for a few quid to pop in when they wore down again. Thing is that's over 12 months ago and still running fine.

Bit of a fiddly job, make sure you have sockets but not very difficult. Worth the effort if that's the problem.

So you can hear the blower motor, but theres no air coming from vents? I have come across problems with the actuators for the vent flaps, (little motors with linkages attached to the air flaps which open/close to allow air into cabin). Really you'd be better off getting an indie mechanic to have a look and work through the problem methodically. Could be a fan speed resistor, could be a fuse, could be a blocked pollen filter...

Ill give one of the local guys here in Ballybrit a call and see if he can take the car while Im at work. I dont want to go near the main dealers with this as it'll cost a fortune.

Thanks for all the help and advice folks.
