The sad part is where it says to be replaced by 4 cylinder turbocharged engines, If they had have said 'because V6 technology has come a long way and are as cheap to produce' I could forgive, but no.

Not quite sure I follow that. Volvo have made amazing advances in the last few years and now have a 215bhp, twin turbo, 5 Cylinder engine that emits less than 120g of CO2.

Volvo have actually replaced the 4 cylinder diesel engine with 5 cylinders across most of the range. It's only the 1.6 Diesel that's a 4 pot and the rest (even the D3 in the V40) are 5 cylinder - either 2.0 or 2.4 depending on application.

Looks like that website might be from the US, in which case they are talking about future petrol engines, so that doesn't really have any effect on us.

No mention of Fiat 5 pot getting the chop.... Does Mercedes still do a 5 pot?

I always liked the sound of five cylinder engines to be honest.

You'd think that Audi in particular would replace some of their V6s with five cylinders in the interests of fuel economy though? It's a shame that very soon there won't be any Volvos with five cylinder petrols, considering that they've been using them ever since the introduction of the 850. At least the bulk of their diesels are five cylinders, but that's not really the same thing to be fair.

Landrover also had a 5-cylinder in diesel format - the td5 in Discos and Defenders.

They were replaced by the TD4 in the Freelander and the TDV6 in the Disco :(

Discovery 2 had the Td5 as did Defender 98-2007.

The Td5 was the last pure Land Rover engine and had nothing to do with BMW as many seem to think. Supposed to have been part of a range of 4, 5 and 6 cyl engines but then BMW came along and their engines were put in Freelander, P38 and L322 Range Rovers instead (Td4 and Td6)

I like the sound of my 5 pot Defender, it's quite distinctive and the current Puma Transit Tdci used in them just doesn't make them sound like a Land Rover any more :(

Volvo used to make quite a thing of their 5cyl engines in adverts in the Sunday Times and the like when they first came out IIRC
