I've been wondering how people get those jobs signing people in at polling stations? I've googled, but google has told me nothing.

How does one apply to do this?

    Thanks!

Depends where you are living? If Dublin, Google Dublin returning officer.Or what ever county you are from.

I found this list: http://www.referendum.ie/downloads/List%20of%20Local%20Returning%20Officers.pdf. Do I just email the person in my area?

Yeah, this topic comes up every time there is a national vote. Apparently it is a closed shop that isn't open to the general public (or private sector).

Not so much 'who you know' but what you do.

Let's hope that they at least pay tax on the earnings.

Sure, I may as well try. My brother did it once, but he is out of range now, so I can't find how he got the job.

Bull****. It's a "closed shop" because people got the job and they continue to do it for years. My mother applied 20 years ago or so and has been doing since then, she's not in the public sector.

It's a 16-17 hour day, you have to be available for whenever it comes up. My mother is missing a wedding for the upcoming referendum as she doesn't want to pass on it and miss it for future elections. Tax is paid on earnings.

You got to be well in with the local political parties to get this junket. That's all I see when I vote is all the local hangers on lookin down their nose at ya!!!

Nonsense – why do so many people assume the negative?

I applied last year and got it, I'm not in the categories mentioned.

It's too late now to apply for this year.

Funny, that just reads as 'whingy whingy whine whine'.....
It used to be the case that anybody who applied was put in the queue. When a position became vacant, the next person got a call. Until the last poll, that is, when returning officers were instructed to give preference to people on the live register. I didn't work the last election. Busy that day . I am a teacher, but I'm right back to the end of the queue. I vote on the same centre I worked in and my position went to a young graduate who hadn't worked at all since he left college the previous year, and best of luck to him with it. In my time working on polls, it was mostly retired people, housewives/husbands and students. I believe there were two other teachers, but that hardly constitutes a 'gimme', in an ionad votail with around 20 booths, does it?

Quit whining about what other people had the cop-on and motivation to find out about and apply for. Do the same yourself. And don't forget to apply for the count as well.

And yes, of course we all paid tax.

interesting topic, what's the pay like?

Last time I worked at the election as a poll clerk I received €280 for the 15 hour day.

I got just under €320 Gross, which paid out €230 net at the Childrens Referendum for a 14 hour day.

I was appointed to the princely position of Presiding Officer. I got it because I could point out family members who were out in '98, '03, '48', '63 and '16, obviously. I also mentioned that I'm in the GAA, and my extensive connections with Fianna Fáil were also utilised of course. Nudge, nudge, wink, wink and all that. Obviously, like.

Alternatively, in a less paranoid world with fewer morons who have chips on their shoulders, I applied online. I didn't hear back, so I took the initiative and rang them. Initiative. Try it. They told me I was refused the position of polling clerk because the government department concerned had instructed the County Registrar to give polling clerk positions to people who were unemployed insofar as possible. However, because I had worked as a polling clerk before, I was asked would I like to be a presiding officer. I said 'Sure'. I didn't know the person at the end of the line. So, I attended a morning training course and the day before the vote, I collected the box. I arrived at the polling station at 8.30am to discover "Presiding Officer" meant I presided over a table, a table, and had a poll clerk with me. Was there until 22.30.

For being there for 14 hours I received €294.28 after tax (€21.02 per hour).

But never mind all that, it's a big conspiracy where I allegedly received €600 and got the post through pulling strings.
