L Lens on a crop body.

So I have a Canon 550D fitted with the EF-S 55-250 lens. I mostly do portrait and glamour work, and this lens has worked well for me so far. However I've recently started doing more work in a studio which is not very big, and I'm struggling to get full length shots and glamour shots.

I was thinking of getting the Canon 24-105 which seems like a perfect focal range for me. My question is do L lenses work on a crop body? I've heard some people say they do and some say they don't. Would I be better of going for something different than an L lens?

They will! All ef and ef-s lens will fit the 550 I've a crop sensor canon and have used various ef lens on it.never an L lens to be honest, but they are ef mount.

Yep they work grand, I was using my brothers 24-70 L on his 550d the other day.

The only thing to remember is that the image circle projected by an EF lens is bigger than the width of a crop sensor. EF-S lenses project a smaller image circle specifically for crop bodies, you can't use an EF-S lens on a full frame camera because the rear of these lenses will hit the mirror. You can, however, use EF and EF-S on any APS-C Canon body.

I have 2 L lens and they both work perfectly on my crop body (20D).

Slight side note, the L lens will be much heavier than your current lens and I find the camera can feel very front heavy but the additional battery pack does help to balance things out. This very much comes down to personal preference and finding out how you like things.

I was only thinking this, i knew they worked but i would really love the 24-105L lens for my 550d.

I tried it on in Birminghams and its a great lens, but as above it makes the camera front heavy, but once you are aware of that its not an issue, i'd say you would get used to it.

Birminghams offered a great trade in price on my 18-135 but my main worry is losing out on the wide end of 18mm, even on a crop sensor, ive gotten used to it.

Now to try justify the upgrade price and mention it to Santa in Arnots when i see him :D

Well I tried the Sigma 70-200 lens on my 550D so it can't be any heavier than that. Actually the 18-135 just might do me, as all I really need is a slightly lower focal range to work more easily in the studio, and I rarely go above 135mm anyway. How much would I pay for one of those and what is the image quality like from them?

Have a look at my Flickr page, most my shots are taken with the 18-135 lens. I'd imagine the shots be even better in the hands of a pro or somebody with more experience than me, only have the DSLR a year now.

I seen one in Birminghams today, second hand for €250.
