Putting in a roadway properly?!

    Hi All,

    I have an existing lane that is is in very bad condition, I want to do it once and do it right so the plan to date is:

    - dig out roadway approx 4in down
    - lay about 8in of 4in down crushed rock (130m, approx 260 tons)
    - I was thinking of laying 1st 4in, rolling in that and then laying the final 4in and final roll

    Cost:
    -260 tons of 4in down @ €10/ton - €2600
    -I have a digger so this is effectively a sunk cost
    -2 days of my own time

    2 questions i have are drainage and finishing;

    Drainage - there is a rise in the lane of approx 6m over the length of it, is this sufficient to stop the potholes developing?! or do I need to create a side fall also?

    Finishing - I am in two minds on this, the roadway will be primarily used for tractors/machinery and occasional stock use. Will the finish be good enough or will i need dust to finish?

    Any opinions would greatly be appreciated, especially those who would do it differently if they had to do it again!!

    6in of 4in down then roll and top it with 804 or screenings (30 - 40 mm down). have the 804 or screenings wet when rolling it to get a good bond.

    If its mainly for machinery why do you need a road way?Fill the holes and top off the tracks with 804 cattle dont mind unless your milking when they need to be clean

    What's underneath? If it's an unstable sub-structure it will continue to break up.

    yeh 2 times 4" inches is plenty but an inch or two of 804 to knit it together really helps.
    get a good roller out for a day - the one with 6' roller on the front. u'll get the 3' one for 100 a day n ye might as well be pissing on it
    is there any chance of getting the road planing stuff near u? its very good stuff once its whacked n settles
