Just a random question for the grapplers - whenever possible do you try to have a wash/brush your teeth whatever before you hit the mats?

    I do.

    Anyone else?

Yes I always put on my best after shave, no but really my gi or shorts etc are always washed and fresh and I always have good personal hygiene, my only gripe is the ***** who don't clip their nails,

As above... And I too hate the manky bastards who won't clip their nails.

Agreed!! It's the one's who don't clip their nails that cause scrapes giving ringworm, mrsa and others an opportunity to infect.

I don't wash right before, but I make sure to have my gear clean and my nails trimmed.

I go straight from work so I cant wash prior to training. I wash every morning and after training plus I always use freshly washed gear and ensure nails are clipped... I always use the hand sanitiser prior to training too.

I seen a guy have his head cut open by a long toe nail, opened him up like a blade

I always take a shower before and after training by respect for other people, my training partner. Because if they're away of mats because infection, I wont train.
Beard of 4-5 days is very annoying too.
    Nails are hell.
BTW, apparently some people use their sticky gi as a submission weapon...deadly.

Agreed on the beards also, nothing worse getting smashed into the mat and having to tap due to complete disgust of a weeks stuble getting rubbed in your mouth

I have to say if someone was rubbing their face against mine, I don't think I'd train with them, regardless of stubble or not. Why would someone do that?

Head control, head and arm choke, man-cat syndrome.

The last one fair enough, but the others don't need face rubbing. Fair enough if somebody has a stubbly head it's annoying. I'm clean-shaven for Movember so I'll see tonight how many faces my face encounters at training.

You always get a bit of face rubbing with those moves though. In general, unless it's Desperate Dan you're rolling with, I can't see how it'd be a problem.

Nothing worse than having to tap by tickle due to stubble.

Yeah, personally I think guys with long hair and beards and such are just dirty f**ckers who don't think about their training partners feelings. Nothing but big bearded lady boys jealous of everyone else's cleanliness. Handsome bastards, mind.

what sort of position are we in here where someones beard is going in your mouth? that being said, long hair is a bit gross a couple of rounds in..

Maybe some people count a shaved head as a head beard?

Long hair is indeed gross and annoying as f**k afew rounds in. But, in fairness, moths.

I had the awful experience of doing repetitive triangle drills with a guy who's scent still haunts me if I let my go there. Genuinely what can you do? I really would have tapped if we were rolling. Its hard to break social norms and say during a drill, sorry pal but you really stink and I just cant put my head there again..I held my breath n suffered it. seems a bit wussy tho, in the interests of being polite..

i have a similar problem,1 individual smells pretty nasty.i try to avoid training with them but sometimes i just have to.gets to a point where im near gagging
and any time they get close to a submission i just tap to get out of there.
after training with them the funk is embedded in your gi and follows you for the rest of class..

so what are you meant to do?
    talk to the individual about?
    talk to the coach?
    or just deal with it?

i might sound like a p**sy but it gets to a point where it kinda takes the p*ss

Naw. Showering before grappling is a bad idea. Your skins outermost layer (the horny layer, or stratum corneum) consists of mainly dead skin cells and other fauna. This layer offers a first line defense against invaders, and by showering before grappling, your disrupting it, and in all likelyhood increasing your chances of picking up something nasty.

I'd wager the majority of infections picked up grappling come from people training with open or uncovered cuts or wounds (you'd be surprised how many people do this), or people training with unkept nails. Both are easily remedied, keep a clippers and spray on plasters in your gearbag.

Fully agree, but some people have 5-6 layers of dead skin cells.
Minimum clean is: genitals, feet, mouth.

I saw abroad a judo club with sink right before entrance to mats where people must wash their feet. I thinks that was good idea.
