Adult Baptism in Church of Ireland

    Hi All,

I have decided after much thought that I want to be baptised in the Church of Ireland . I am in my mid-20s and was never baptised as neither of my parents were religious.

Has anyone on here been baptised as an adult in the Church of Ireland? If so, can you tell me what the process was like? Are there classes etc. to attend like RCIA for Catholics?

    Many thanks,

    Kia Kaha

There's nothing systematic, like RCIA in the Catholic church. It's very much a matter for discussion between you and the minister who is to baptise you how you should best prepare yourself for baptism, and it's a matter for you and him to agree when you are ready.

On the one hand, this gives a commendable degree of freedom and flexibilty to adapt your preparation to your particular needs and circumstances. On the other, it means there's a lack of established practices and models and resources that you can draw on.

Thanks Peregrinus. Just need to find a friendly minister now.

Now I'm confused - why would you want to be baptised in the C of I, if you are not currently attending a CofI church?

(for the record, I attend a presbyterian church where we have, over the last few years, baptised adults in the sea, and a swimming pool..)

If you must know I was thinking about it after attending Church of England whilst living in the UK. Recently moved to Ireland and want to be baptised now. One can attend a church and not personally know the minister. Especially if you've just moved into the area.

In any C of I church I've ever been in there are cards or forms in the seats for new visitors to fill in their details (if they want to) and hand to the church warden or minister. If the minister misses you after the church service then your details will be given to him/her to contact you and arrange to call so you get to know each other. I would expect this to be normal procedure.

Best of wishes when you get Baptised in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, what a gift, we can't imagine it - you will be 'sealed' :) - May your journey thereafter be blessed always, and the road rise to meet you always as he guides you in your heart.

What a lovely and most welcome thread.
