    Hey guys,

Mock me all you like but the family is expanding fast (3rd on the way) and the days of my wrx are well over. Need to buy a people carrier, looking to purchase a corolla verso 04 2.0 D4D (engine code 1CD FTV). It produces wait for it 116hp! lol, less than half the power of my wrx and probably double the weight does not bode well.

I've been trying to figure out if anyone does remaps on these, all i can find is old threads about tuning boxes and that the piezo ECUs on these are not mappable? apparently newer 2.2 with Bosch ECU is mappable? Obviously a no brainer to get the newer model but at least 2k dearer and I can't afford that. These are the same engines I believe as in the avensis, can anybody guide me in the right direction?

Thanks you all for your help

    Moe

It may only make 116bhp but it's probably on par with your Wrx on Torque.

A remap with improve that too though tbh

Would you not look at something else like a Galaxy? 1.9 TDi is a VW unit and as you probably know is very tunable with a remap.

Supergurrier, thats about the only thing I have to look forward to, oh and the increase in torque is more than that in horsepower with a remap!

Bazz26 thanks for the info, never knew Ford were using the VW PD engines, they are very tunable indeed. I appreciate the galaxy would be so much more practical , I'm trying to go for the best driving experience in something that doesn't look like a bus (denial I know) as well as driving experience. I was going to go for an old Mercedes ML 270, I'm going to test drive one but something tells me the driving experience will be horrible , I do alot of motorway miles and I'd imagine doing anything above the speed limit would be a scary proposition in an ML (X5 is so refined at speed but unfortunately no 3rd row option). Verso is complimented on reviews for having a really good review, and looks half decent ( I like the looks a bit more than a VW touran).

Still looking for the advice on the remap everyone!

I would imagine the galaxy sharan Alhambra are a much better drive. A stock 04 new model 1.9 tdi galsharambra has 110 - 150 hp depending on the spec.

    or a 200hp 2.8i VR6

The only MPV I can think of that is any way decent to drive is the S-Max and I'd say they are outside of the OPs budget.

Convincing figures, agree, I just can't stomach to van looks, will keep them in mind and see if they grow on me, thanks for the suggestion Ronnie

What about the Mitsubishi grandis? Uses the vw 2.0 TDI engine. Not as bulletproof as the 1.9 but then the 2.0 D-4D in the verso isn't without its own issues.
Grandis is quite a funky car for an mpv and i found it decent to drive and nippy enough too.

Honda frv 2.2 may be worth thought, quite big and versatile in the back for 3 kids. Nice drive too.

Is running cost an issue or do you just need more space?

If its just more space then what about a Ford S-max 2.5T or an Opel Zafira GSI or OPC? A friend of mine just got a mint 04 GSI from the UK registered here for approx 4k and it has some choice upgrades too(OPC turbo etc)

Unless your planning on more then 3 then what about an estate car? Plenty of high performance versions of those available.

To be fair it is a compact MPV with a respectable engine. The D4D is light years ahead of a 1.9TDi. Compared to a WRX it will be slow, but compared to most cars it will be well able to move.

Toyota, or TTE sold an official tuning box for that car once I think.

They did, they're supplied by Toyota Motorsport now I believe. That's if they're even still doing them.

(This was the case in 08 anyway)

Thank you all for the replies, Colm I will have a look at the grandis, and yes maidhc and colm I am aware that there are various tuning boxes for these, I was hoping someone would do a custom remap as in the world of VW, BMW, mercedes, Audi you wouldnt be caught dead with a box, everybody goes for a cutom tune according to how much the individual engine can take.

Nissan doctor that 2.5t sounds interesting, I'm assuming these are petrol models? I'll consider them but a daily commute from portlaoise to Dublin might make them less favourable.

If it wasn't for the motorway I don't think I would mind an ML 270 much, all their issues aside they are pretty good value for a seven seater, SUV look rather than a van, autobox and leather, heated sets etc... I would imagine anything above 120 would be pretty dramatic in these and the body roll, well lets not even go there.

I looked into this for a customer earlier this year and I was told by Joe Power (a well known tuner) that the only Toyota diesel he can remap is the 1.4 D4d. So it looks like you are stuck with the tuning box.

The Ford 2.5T is a petrol alright. Its probably one of the fastest people carriers but a long commute might get expensive pretty fast.

On the ML, assuming its a W163 models your looking at, I couldn't advise against them more. They are horrible to drive, badly made(they were built in America, not Germany) and are far from economical. IMO they are barely a step up from a ssangyong in the SUV list.
