Sorry on phone so can only do a copy and paste job ATM..

    From Sky News

A 7.7 magnitude earthquake has struck off the west coast of Canada, prompting a tsunami warning to be issued for Hawaii.

The quake happened at just after 8pm local time about 96 miles (155km) south of Masset in the Haida Gwaii region, formerly known as the Queen Charlotte Islands.

A tsunami warning has now been issued for Hawaii - waves are expected to hit there in just under two hours.

Tremors were felt across a wide area in British Columbia, both on its Pacific islands and on the mainland.

Residents in parts of British Columbia were evacuated but the province seemed to escape the biggest quake in Canada since 1949 largely unscathed.

According to CNN, it's due to hit in the next 10-15 minutes.

So far seems to just be a bit of extra water

The scientist on the ground in Hawaii who was speaking on CNN just now said that traditionally the first wave isn't the highest there so they are still waiting to see what the second and third and maybe fourth one are like.

It could take an hour. I wonder if the scientists are hedging their bets in view of what happened to the Italian scientists who 'failed to predict' the earthquake. I'd imagine everyone from now on will err hugely on the side of caution.

Found his name. He sounded quite disappointed. :)
[Update 4:50 a.m.] Gerard Fryer, senior geophysicist at the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center to reporters:
    – "The tsunami is arriving right now. I can't say how big it is because it's coming in as we speak."
    – "Typically the first wave is not the largest. Having inconvenienced everybody by making them evacuate in the middle of the night, I was hoping it would be bigger. The following waves I am sure will be bigger."

Isn't 7.7 is a bit small anyway? I bet it'll just be minor amounts of water the entire time

"I was hoping it would be bigger"
How big? Would something as big as the Asia tsunami of Dec 26 2004 and the estimated 300,000 dead be big enough for him? What an a*****e !

I think he probably meant in terms of justifying the warning and the evacuation that goes with it rather than in excitement value.

As it is, people have been heading back to the danger areas in spite of the all clear not being given. I suppose the more times they give these warnings and 'nothing' happens the less attention people will pay to warnings the next time and someday a big, big tragedy will ensue from relaxed attitudes to the warnings.
