Hi, can anyone recommend a cheap Freeview box? I live close to the border and we can receive the majority of Freeview channels - my ould pair recently purchased a Panasonic Viera Freeview HD TV. However there are 2 other TV's in the house and boxes will need to be purchased. I really don't want to fork out 70 quid for a Saorview box if a Freeview box will work (I've seen Freeview boxes for sale in Asda for £20).

It,s a one off spend, freeeview boxes cant recieve saorview, if the saorview channels are available then why would you not buy a box that can recieve them.
Argos will have restocked saorview boxes for 60 euro in a weeks time.

On the Border a Freeview HD box makes more sense. Or a 2013 certified Saorview box. Not current ones.

If you can/want-to receive all services (Saorview/Freeview/FreeviewHD/NImux) a FreeviewHD spec box is recommended (can't recommend any specific model, maybe others can). If you dont want the FreeviewHD channels a Saorview box will do for the Saorview and Freeview SD channels.

Another option for spare TVs is the non-approved scart plug-in type receivers such as the Ferguson Ariva T65mini anf the Go Clever t200 (Tesco €39). These won't receive the FreeviewHD channels.

Most Freeview only receivers won't do Saorview as they don't have an MPEG-4 video decoder.

I havent found a freeview hd box that is fully compatible with saorview yet. I havent owned the humax which is at the higher end of the price scale so cant comment on that but as the op is looking for a cheap solution then the choice is up to him whether to buy a freeview only box for 20 sterling or a saorview box for 60 euro, or even a hd box..
By the way there is a guy called Dave, genuine seller, who sells on the border between Derry and Bridgend who deals in house clearance stuff and frequently has second hand freeview boxes on sale for a fiver. I bought a sky hd (the latest Amstrad one) box almost new with a white ni card for 25 stg a couple of weeks back, it,s lying in my garage now doing nothing, didnt need it, didnt want it but couldnt turn it down.

Overpriced by x2 for an uncertified built down to price generic box that's not properly compatible. Shame on Dunnes, Tesco, Dairygold etc for not ordering Certified boxes enough in advance.

Most "Freeview HD" boxes are more compatible. This TVstar will not do "Freeview HD"
