    Hi
A total technophobe here - need help

Bought recommended Saorview box and I also have a free to air box. I presumed moving cables etc. pretty much like I connected my cd player would connect my new box! It does not. Thinking I may have an aerial problem? It is in the attic and worked perfectly on old analogue system - any ideas?

    thanks

Did you receive all 4 analogue channels with that aerial?
Have you had a look at the Saorview coverage checker to identify your nearest recommeded Saorview transmitter and frequency?

Yep - all 4 channels and the website tells me I should have no probs....

Power to the saorbox is fine - using a scart connector between the saorview and free to air as my TV is on wall and I cannot get the HDMI cable from TV to box, but Saorview website has flowchart which tells me that this should work???

Is the aerial connected directly to the Saorview receiver.
    Any amplifiers in the setup?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10 LLColej

No amps - I have an in and out aerial type connection, by process of elimination i.e. aerial that is not required for free to air I think I have identified the one to the aerial. However, there is one aerial type ! connection that will only fit in the free to air box and not the saorview so I am ignoring this one..... If I take it out I lose my free to air.... so am assuming it is connected to my dish???

Having looked that up online! New house and my electrician went a bit overboard - so I have all wiring in walls and a socket with 3 aerials coming out of it and another one that looks like it should be for a phone connection?

Are you sure you're connecting to the cable connected to the aerial in the attic?
Could you be connecting to a co-ax cable not connected to the aerial, but because the analogue signal was very good that cable was acting as an aerial?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10 LLColej

Nope defo not connected to that one - I have again tried all variations of connections - but just so I am clear I am using the free to air box as the OUT option and the aorview box as the in - I am using the TV scart from the free to aer into the only scart available in the saorview - maybe scart is the problem? will get the spare and try it....

Not sure what you mean by this, are you referring to the co-ax cable from the attic aerial or the scart?

Can you connect the Saorview box directly to the TV via scart and the aerial directly to the Saorview box and test this setup without the FTA sat receiver in the loop?

OK tried other scart and no luck, thanks for your help I am really frustrated with this - cause logic is not working....

am now going to try it in an upstairs room to see if I can get it to work!

Can you clearly describe how every thing is connected up e.g.
    Aerial->Saorview STB->SCART->Tv
    Sat Dish->FTA STB->SCART->TV

Could it be that your attic aerial installation isn't good enough for Saorview, external aerial required?

Ok - this is the latest - it works in the room with no free to air just straight connection from TV to Saorview box, have tried it in 3 other rooms where I have free to air and different connection types and no luck, must be something to do with how I am connecting them! Hitting the wine now as I am losing the will to live! Thanks for your help but head is wrecked!

Ok from what I can understand from the above you might have things a little mixed up.

Is your TV an old one with a big back or is it a Flat screen type TV?

The reason I'm asking this is because is because if you tv is a flat screen type it may have a "HDMI" conection at the back and you can connect you saorview box to this.

The old aerial wire that was going into your tv should now be going into your saorview box, you should then have either a scart cable or a HDMI cable going from the saorview box to the tv.

there should NOT be any cable going from the F.T.A to the saorview box

If your tv is one of the old big back type and only has one scart, have a look around it and see can you see 3 coloured connections red, white and yellow. if it has these 3 colours your can get a cable that goes from the scart socket at the back of the saorview box and then changes into these 3 colours and works the same way.

I hope this helps a little. If you want me to explain more i can

It is a flat screen about 5 years old with 2 scart connections and HDMI - I have now connected the HDMI to the FTA and used a scart connection to the free to air - is that right - TV is now off the wall and sitting on the floor and still nothing!

OMG you are a genius - it is finally working - the HDMI connection did the trick. I really thought I had tried this earlier - thank you so much for your info.

    Job done!

Your Free to air (satellite) box should have a cable that comes from the wall and screws into the back of it and then should have a scart lead going from the box to the tv.

Your Saorview box should have an aerial cable coming from the wall that pushes into the antenna (aerial) input on the back of the box and then you should have a HDMI cable going from the saorview box into the tv.

to find the channel on the tv that your saorview comes in on you need to press a button on your TV remote that may say either "AV" or "SOURCE" . when you press this button you should see a list coming up on the screen that may say things like , AV1 AV2 HDMI1 . your saorview should be coming in on HDMI 1.

    what make TV is it?

If it's me you are talking to, well then no hassle but I'm probably better known as a chancer :).

For yourself, if you are thinking of getting saorview boxes for the other TV's in the house that already have F.T.A my advice would be to think of getting combi boxes.
Basically its the two boxes in one, its a lot neater and saves you messing with 3 remote controls. Once the tv is turned on all the channels are in the one box and one remote.

Go to a good retailer that will take thier time and explain it to you in real life so that when you bring it home it will be easy for ya. some good local retailers might even know where you are getting your signal from and be able to pre tune it for ya.

Heres my next problem - have now swapped Tv's - bought a new HDTV which was working in another room with FTA and Saorview - have now moved it to a room where it is now only connected to FTA and the FTA is not working? Complete mystery??

    What model/make of settop box?

When you say chorus, do you mean it is a cable TV?

A saorview settop box connects to the TV aerial.

Is your TV old or new? If it is an older TV then you need a scart cable to go from the settop box to the TV or if it is newer you could use a HDMI cable if the settop box has that type of connection.

scart => change to AV1 to view saorview channels.

hdmi => switch to hdmi source to view.

At startup the box will do a full scan for channels.

Before switchover if you got the Irish channels, then your aerial should be good enough to get saorview. (You might even get some UK channels depending on your location.)

If it's an MMDS aerial something like this, then it won't work, different frequency range.

You require an an aerial like one of these UHF types - http://www.tvtrade.ie/tv-and-radio-aerials/uhf-aerials.html

tried it with scart but no joy it starts the scan but can get no channels , it was a chorus aerial getting 8 or 9 channels including sky news all free i think on the QT , i'll get an aerial and stick it in the attic and see if it does the trick

i'm nearly certain the aerial on the roof is the MMDS one
