Smell of exhaust inside cabin

Been getting a smell of exhaust in the cabin of the car lately. Pollen filter was changed but no difference. Had a good root around the engine bay today when I was changing the v-belt but I can't find the source.
I can only notice it for a short period of time after the car starts, maybe for 5 mins, especially when idle.
Normally I'd just ignore it but my kids do be in the car with me and we all know diesel exhaust fumes aren't the nicest of things to be breathing in.
Btw car is Audi 2.0tdi PD.

    Should be easy find.
I would wait till its dark ,open the bonnet ,get a flash lamp and shine it all over the exhaust system and egr. Do it when cold and have somebody rev the engine while you look for the leak.
    You should see smoke.

Its also a possibility that the injector/s are leaking. I had the same problem with my pug 407 and it turned out to be one of my injectors leaking. Check for a black carbon substance around each injector.

on that car more than likely the flexi joint on the exhaust leaking is fairly common, you won,t get exhaust gas in the cabin on a pd engine as they are under the rocker cover.

If this is an A4 or an A6 2.0TDI then the EGR cooler is prone to breaking which will give the symptoms you describe.

An A3 George, you've done work on her for me before....should really align all my usernames across forums ;)

I actually graphed the EGR with VCDS on a drive to work the other day, not ideal circumstances in that I started it before I left and stopped when I got to work...driving while texting is bad, driving while using a laptop is a little bit on the dangerous side :)
    Is the EGR sticking?

Is it a blue one? Could still be the EGR cooler at fault although they don't seem to give as much trouble on the A3/Golf. If you look down the back of the engine you will see it. It is a long cylindrical part with a few smaller pipes attached. They usually break at one of the flanges on the smaller pipe. Should be easy enough to see as there will be black soot everywhere.

Yeah the blue sportback. Cheers I'll have a look tomorrow in daylight.
