Second hand engine or a rebuild.
    Cheaper get a second hand.

A rebuild is, in most cases, the better option once done properly unless you know that your old engine was in bad condition anyway(burning oil or similar). See here: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=77563130

The rebuild will give you essentially a new cylinder head(all wearable parts replaced) so means you have a known perfect engine rather then a second hand engine of unknown history.

I'd estimate that you'd be looking at somewhere around the €1000 - €1200 mark for a proper job depending on the extent of the damage.

When did you last have your timing belt changed? Unfortunately, other then the fact that the garage who serviced it should have asked about when the belt was done last, they are very unlikely to have any responsibility for it failing.

Thanks the garage have seen the car and said that I should replace the engine too many pistons were damaged. He also said the timing belt was fine when he did the service a couple of weeks ago but that when it was changed last time there was a chance that they didnt replace the water pump and that with the santa fe the water pump needs to be replaced too does that make sense ? thanks for the help :)

if they did t changed the water pump last time the belt was done . there a big chance bearing in water pump fail and the time belt came off the pulley
