Not sure of the legal side of things but is it legal to convert a petrol to diesel..?(like back in the late 70's..:)..)
I'm guessing i will need to contact the tax office but seeing that i would be going from a 2.0 petrol to a 2.0 diesel i would'nt think there should be any trouble.
I'm thinking Insurance could be a differant sorry...
    What do Ye think...????

Probably an engineers report required to get it reclassified. Insurers might load the premium due to being modified.
No doubt you know what you are doing on the mechanical/technical side.

You'll buy an awful lot of petrol for the cost of making that monumental mechanical change!

Shouldnt be a problem Id think.

You need to contact Shannon, fill in a form dealing with a classification change.
You may need to go to a main dealership of the make you are dealing with to verify the engine (bhp etc) engine number needed here.

They will issue a new vrd showing the changes and then you will need to nct it as the changed vehicle type.

This is how it worked back longer than I care to remember.

Its a long time since I have heard of this being done, I cant imagine it being too difficult to get the details changed on the log book and being legal from that point of view.
not sure how the insurance companies would look at it like mickdw said, but the way the are at the moment they are likely to look for additional premium or not quote you on it.

also keep in mind that the suspension will probably need to be done as well

Insurance should not be a problem as long as its a car thats produced in diesel as well as petrol as standard. EG golf converted to diesel from petrol.

If its now registered as diesel it will be tested as diesel at nct.IMO
Probably adviseable to check with insurance first though. Dont take my word for it.

I agree with what you are saying and if it was done properly there should be no difference but I would not be surprised what insurance companies would do.

I've done this before & had zero issues, just filled in the tax form (change of particulars) for change of engine capacity etc.
Car was available from the manufacturer with the engine I installed which made insurance easy.

    :):)
I'm thinking of fitting a 2.0 hdi (110bhp) into a 406 coupe...from 98-02 the 406 coupe only had 2.0 petrol engine and then they fitted the 2.2 hdi
    unit in 02.

I plan to pick up a broken 406 glx (saloon) and swap all over.....:)

My only worry is that from 98-02 the peugeot 406 coupe's never had a diesel and the insurance companies will fob me off...

I'll make a few calls and do alittle research and report back.

Thanks to all for your informative info...;)

Interesting project. How will you manage the wiring loom side of things ? I assume the engine wiring loom won't split easily from the main loom ? Splice the back-end wiring loom from the petrol coupe onto the front-end loom from a HDi estate (closer than a saloon, rear wiper etc)?

Years ago the 405's were dead easy to do, and a very common transplant.

I plan to gut both cars totally (seats/carpets/wiring looms/etc) and then see how i'll approach it....If i have to make up new looms then i will.

The main engine loom comes from the bsi/engine fusebox so i'll follow its orginal route on the saloon.
Its more of a project more than anything else.I know it will take alot of time
and modifications but hopefully it will be worth it in the end....:)

From 2002 onwards most peugeots have multiplex wiring so thats one less thing to worry about.

Whats your plan for the engine your taking out and what condition is it in?

I've a spare 2.0 TCT engine for my Activa I've been tinkering with that I'm toying with the idea of swapping in to my other Xantia . You can never have too many engines.:)

Insurance would be a bit of a hurdle I would imagine especially if your creating a car that deosn't exist on their system. You might have to change companies depending on who your with and go one of the less amin stream ones. I'd imagine the instrument cluster would tricky enough if there not a direct swap if it contains immobilisers etc.
Have you checked any peugeot forums to see if it's been done before?
